I'm an astronomer at @uofgravity.bsky.social working to understand ripples in the Universe (gravitational waves) made when dead stars (black holes and neutron stars) crash into each other. Come and join us! We have cake (at a responsible frequency). You also get to work with me. Which I hope isn't excessively off-putting!

I'll admit I'm a little intrigued as to how Meta AI intends to convert a photo of my thesis into a tarot card. But not intrigued enough to find out...

I wrote a little bit about finishing the Munros, and what's next. Maybe what's next is being semi-consistent about writing? Who knows?

One list I'm not unhappy to be on.

I think you'll find he was in fact blown towards, and not out.

Happy publication day morning to me!!

Dear friend @chrislintott.bsky.social said on record that it was "Truly unique! Sparkling with charm and interest & uncompromisingly clear".

In person he said "I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but it was surprisingly good" πŸ₯³ Major compliment! πŸ€—πŸ§ͺ

"Sparkling with charm and interest".

So giving everyone $5000 collected from general taxation, and... Redistributed...? I didn't see socialism being the big pivot Trump would make for the midterms.

Watching the trailer for the Ocarina of Time remake was nerve-wrecking. There are few things scarier, it turns out, than seeing a core part of your childhood being remastered in 4k. With voice acting.

8 September 2026. The day my kitchen appliances started making veiled threats against me by email.

Two consecutive emails, from hotpoint and beko, both with the subject line "Daniel, accidents happen..."

Strong assumption that it was identifiable.

I discovered that the acoustics of my new(ish) home office are surprisingly good today. Apologies to the neighbours.

The summary paper would be an especially good option if you need a journal club paper πŸ‘€ as it's concise, and has pretty plots which your journal clubmates are sure to enjoy.

(This is also my first foray into cosmology; I'm finally branching-out from the cataloguing business).

Gravitational waves let us do this a few different ways, but we're using black holes to do it. That's not, in and of itself, new, however we've developed a technique which allows us to squeeze even more information out of our observations, and ultimately get a better answer with fewer observations.

@daniel-williams.co.ukSep 7, 2026, 11:43 AM

Looking back in a different way, arxiv.org/abs/2609.04991 describes a new technique we've been working on here in @uofgravity.bsky.social to improve the methods we use to measure the speed at which the Universe is expanding.

@daniel-williams.co.ukSep 7, 2026, 11:43 AM

We were invited to put this together by Nature Astronomy, and we're hoping to see it in print later in the autumn all going well!

@daniel-williams.co.ukSep 7, 2026, 11:43 AM

I'd like to think of this paper as a celebration of just how far we've come in so little time as a field. It was fun to put this together as well as trying to find some novel ways to put this together visually.
