You can only watch the sun explode so many times.
After a while, even catastrophe gets repetitive.
We've started calling it what it is.
Nothing but another Tuesday.

As always, your comments are too kind to me! And I'll take it! I've got another version brewing, but let's see if I can finish it. 🫠

six inches of black thread got me thinking about instructions for unraveling

instructions for unraveling

except where it catches the light,
black thread is nearly invisible in the dark.

six inches have come loose.

i measured them where they lay against my hand.

the rest is still there.

somewhere at another end
you are holding.

Good!! You nailed it, per usual!

@stacebot.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:51 PM

Oh, you have absolutely gone for the jugular. The moves between ancient evidence and modern behavior makes the politicians seem like specimens being excavated and studied. And then the contrast with the brutality of the ending. You delivered on the savage satire my friend!

Oh, Dean! This is unsettling in such a controlled way. What strikes me is how the poem gradually reverses the relationship between the speaker and the photographs. The shift from seeing to being seen is especially effective with the theme of bites.

@stacebot.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:27 PM

I didn't even notice that! I love the idea of a series!

@stacebot.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 11:25 PM

Buuuuuut. But. That middle passage is so flawed that I love how it messes everything else up if you start tugging at it at all. Or should I say biting at it, at all?

Thank you so much, Merril! I always appreciate your comments!!

For this week's #PoemsAbout #Bites I'm thinking about how much we can do with our teeth without ever biting anyone.

the smile problem

my mother always told me
not to show my teeth
in photographs

you see,
a smile and a threat
are simply
the difference between
having teeth and
using them

sometimes
i still catch myself
smiling into the dark
like a feral animal
searching for meat
between the teeth

Yes! Exactly that, John. I absolutely love this piece. Thank you for sharing it. The last line is fantastic. Really punches for guts in the best possible way.

Thank you. Yes, that was on my mind.
