I worked with—and deeply admired—Helen for almost 30 years. She was hands down *the best source* about emerging infectious diseases that I've ever known. My first warning of COVID was when on Dec 28, 2019 she reposted a ProMED mail report of an atypical pneumonia cluster: "This doesn't look good."

Dozens of Toronto bike riders are occupying bike lanes to block Doug Ford’s order to tear them out. Bike lanes are a highly effective means of saving lives. Keep up with this thread 👇

I really like those bioswales on Yale. They’re sort of like an urban marsh. And very pleasant to walk there.

Watch me obsess over the swale on yale in this vid!! youtu.be/GB7n56k5HZc

Got my computer now, so peep these gorgeous screenshots from this presentation showing what real urban stormwater runoff solutions look like. Yes, you saw that right - runoff from 435 acres in Cap Hill/SLU filtered by the swale on yale!!! LFG! NOT A TREE IN SITE THERE! LOL

@shirleyswirley.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 1:45 AM

i'm honestly not sure what it stems from besides motivated reasoning lol

@shirleyswirley.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 1:44 AM

lol honestly, same. but perhaps you should also begin to feel confident saying: "restored shorelines and floodplains are nice. we should save the salmon and orca by fixing more of them"

@shirleyswirley.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 1:43 AM

Right?!?! Could there be a better win win win win win win solution?

Letter excerpt: To be specific: consolidation of stops to keep only 4th and James forces folks with disabilities to add more than 1 block to their journey as well as a difficult-to-use thermoplastic crosswalk, which in many cases, takes away access altogether.

- The Municipal Tower’s accessible entrance is first through the Columbia Tower entrance on 4th Avenue and then up to the Municipal Tower through the interior of the building.

Use of the remaining 4th and James stop forces folks with disabilities to not only add 1.5 blocks to their journey, but two additional slanted and difficult-to-use thermoplastic crosswalks as well, one of which allows for right turns on red. Again, this takes away access altogether in many cases.

In general, the emphasis that Metro has been increasingly putting on routing transit riders to light rail has left many individuals with mobility disabilities more than inconvenienced - it has stranded and excluded them. Buses are meant to be complementary to high-capacity rail systems.

They are meant to provide frequent, closer, and more accessible stops, platforms, and boardings and are a lifeline for disabled folks with mobility challenges. These more accessible bus routes and stops are NOT “redundant” or “inefficient”. They are essential.

By significantly reducing bus service and consolidating bus stops along 4th and 2nd Avenues, Metro is unnecessarily moving backwards on accessibility

Please sign. Also, if you’re not in the habit of fully reading action letters – I know I don’t always read the full text! – please read it because it’s a really good letter that makes some really important points about transit access, and the over emphasis on efficiency at the expense of access.
