A somewhat anxious #sophiefromromania had to be persuaded to complete our park walk this morning but we decided we all deserved a #bigbreakfast
On this day in 1996, Edith Penrose died. We didn't know much about her until @dianecoyle1859.bsky.social recommended her but we found Edith utterly fascinating and her insights profound. Have a listen to our podcast to learn more about her life & ideas. #EconSky podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/s...
The impressive and unusual Monk’s Door in Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire 🤩
#sophiefromromania agrees with Shirley #strictly about that performance
rorycellanjones.substack.com/p/movers-and... This week’s episode all about how people with Parkinson’s are more prone to the brittle bone condition osteoporosis could have been a downer- but our brilliant guest has great tips for better bone health, including playing lots of walking football

Great piece
‘If any of these cases does come to court, it will be interesting to see whether OpenAI can claim that the actions it took to control the agents were sufficient to protect it against claims of negligence. I’d be surprised.’

It would really help. Thank you.
Governments that pass down responsibilities but keep the purse strings do not really devolve power.
@pedroecongeog.bsky.social & @davidwglasgow.bsky.social explore the limits of #decentralisation in #England & #Portugal in @tesg-journal.bsky.social.

Yes I think so though it will depend how much the AI labs can vertically integrate. There’s the electricity price also.
Sharing our top four finds so far this year for #UKFungusDay.
Giant puffball
Sulphur tufts
Porcelain Fungus
Poplar Fieldcap.
How about you? What's been your best find so far in 2026?
This is from Nordhaus. He essentially defined a computational task. He calculated historical price per lumen for light also, not just electricity
Or the other way round - they’re not making enough money so the price (per computational task, not per token) isn’t falling all that fast
I’m a bit sceptical about the AI line arxiv.org/pdf/2608.29843 and also there are papers taking the price of computation line further eg www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
The second is this book that I bought a week ago and haven’t read yet so this is just a new book post. I know I will love it as I love all the @hookland.bsky.social posts and have always followed them. They speak to me so have no doubt this book will too.
#sophiefromromania was a bit disappointed the neighbourhood cat wasn’t in its usual place at lunchtime
V interesting. I’m not sure the AI field was very intellectually diverse to start with. Also, has anyone written the definitive story of how the BBC seeded the UK’s strengths in computer science and AI??
Dear people of the UK, this Prize is for you! In 1946, the British founded the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. 80 years on, NRW says "Thank you", presenting its highest award, the State Prize, to the people of the UK, recognising the deep friendship between the state and the UK.
In which case ao much better to just say it’s been paused…
