more info: When Willem Arondeus said "Let it be known that homosexuals aren't cowards", he was talking not just about himself, but a whole heap of the resistance, including his friend Sjoerd Bakker. "The Tailor of the Resistance", Sjoerd had been working with artists such as Gerrit van der Veen and Willem Arondeus in helping Jews with places to hide, false ID's and ration coupons.
When the grand plan to attack the Municipal Register in Amsterdam came up, they would need some disguises to be able to walk straight in. So who better to make some Dutch police uniforms! Sjoerd was there on the day with the gang, clutching his pistol just in case.
His last request, after they can been caught (dobbed in by a traitor), was to be buried in his beautiful pink shirt. Willem had tried to save him by claiming he was acting out of love and dedication to him (they weren't in a romantic relationship but it was worth a try) which he denied.
Three of the four Bakker brothers were gay, with all of them participating actively in the resistance. It was hard to not make these guys too, but I had to choose - I easily could have made ten or a hundred times the minis if I had the budget!
Sjoerd Bakker was a sweetheart, described as quiet and humble, and he lived for fashion. However when the jackboots on the ground were marching past his shop, his massive scissors became another tool of the resistance. He gave his life to free others from sorrow, and it's why I find it more important than ever to remember him.
I visited his grave at Overeen and it says [in Dutch] ""but the greatest of these is love".
