True

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 4:05 PM

Ha probably true

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:58 PM

Yes it depends on how you want to define “support.” I’m just saying that low-ranking progressive preferences for Zimmerman over Arnold in 2024 helped push Zimmerman into office after Clark & Green were locked in and Lykins, Freeman & others were eliminated

So should STV fans be supporting adding party lines to ballots? Seems as if a party system promptly emerged in response to incentives

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 3:29 PM

“Voters should rank only those whom they support.”

@helenjung.bsky.social & @oregonian.com ed board, endorse as you see fit but this isn’t true! Our system also gives voters incentive to rank their lesser evils further down. www.oregonlive.com/opinion/2026...

Located across the river from Portland, Vancouver, WA's new zoning allows apartments citywide. Downtown has no height limit, commercial streets allow about 11 floors, and most of the rest either 3 or 7. 🏘️🏙️

Good morning, I have just two questions for you 1) did Billy ever actually go by “Bill” 2) has any lyric ever elevated a song more rapidly and unexpectedly than “and the pyano it sounds like a carnival”

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 7:29 AM

Do it for public revenue per capita!

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 4:13 AM

This is indeed pretty sketchy

Vancouver, WA did the biggest upzone / deregulation possibly in the entire nation and not enough people are talking about it. And this all came from City staff - they didn’t have community advocates demanding this for years!

A chart showing the zoning districts with minimum density and maximum height that have been in effect since July 1, 2025. In the “low scale” zone, the lowest density other than manufactured home parks, the minimum density is 8 du/ac and the max height is three floors (45 feet). Vancouver, WA’s new zoning map, which has just 10 zones.The four comprehensive plan designations and ten zones in Vancouver. The four comp plan designations are residential neighborhoods, urban mixed use, employment and industry, and green space.

Hm, thanks. I’ve never prioritized the IRC/IBC threshold stuff because it seems like townhouses are mostly a fine option! But I’m probably missing something

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 4:29 PM

Indeed

But I think downtown will be more likely to rebound if we have multiple investors (including the public if we can find the money) pursuing a diversity of bets, not just this guy’s. And I always worry about the *political* effects of concentrating economic power/ownership.

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 4:23 PM

I guess I’d say that downtown is a long way from a monopoly, especially if you say every office building there is competing with every kitchen table for 20 miles around. And if his investment doesn’t work out, I’m not sure it’s worse than the scenario mentioned in WW about banks owning instead.

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 4:11 PM

Tim Scott’s “opportunity zone” concept was intended for disinvested areas. When it made it into the 2017 Ryan/Trump tax reform & got applied to booming downtown Portland, I thought that was pretty sketchy & cynical. Today though, I gotta say it fits the bill exactly for helping our downtown reboot.

@andersem.bsky.socialOct 8, 2026, 4:08 PM

But only if he can invest more than he bought Big Pink (etc) for within ~30 months of purchase. So: a great time to become a tenant of this dude if you want a nice downtown Portland office!
