There's nothing in what I said that makes a case for this tech being inherently bad

Me? With my claws and teeth I will will defend art and artists as essential to any version of a beautiful livable world.

Appreciating @ciaranm.bsky.social's grounded, pithy rundown of the ghost stories, catastrophizing, and novice security practices dubiously shaping the current cybersecurity + AI landscape 🙏👇

New from 404 Media: the Texas police who used Flock to track a woman who self-administered abortion also used AI to write their report about the whole situation. They used AI to summarize a discussion of “the legal implications of the situation.”

To be clear--TRANS PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE BODILY AUTONOMY LIKE EVERYONE AND ACCESS TO HORMONES, OF COURSE, YES! And a critical perspective on VC-backed quasi-regulated wellness inflected industry growing around the real but ill-defined term perimenopause is warranted.

Yes we all think this is stupid but we, the ppl brushing our teeth, are not the customers

The customers are the investors who in ~1yr will be enticed to fund Dyson's smart dental AI spinoff, featuring models trained on "the world's largest real time floss dataset"

Perimenopause is *so* hot right now.

Yes! Also deeply insulting to readers, which hits personally as someone who learned a bulk of my mind palace reading things that required I bump against my lack of knowledge and familiarity, then work (the fun part) to incorporate new knowing. A troublingly essentialist undertone re 'intelligence'

Kudos to Andreas 💐 Thousands of us at Google organized against the company’s Maven contract nearly 10 years ago, even though principles like this existed. We saw no hope that such principles would survive bottom line pressure—nor were they legally drafted to do so.

I work at Google DeepMind. This won't make me popular. But it's all public reporting: 2014: DeepMind reportedly sold to Google on conditions: no military use, independent oversight 2026: a Pentagon contract for "any lawful government purpose" Not one safeguard survived intact

Collage titled "Trust is not Governance — an essay from inside Google DeepMind, written in personal capacity."

A 2014 memorandum, "Conditions of the Acquisition," lists: military applications of DeepMind technology banned; deployment decisions before an independent ethics board (as reported in Mallaby's The Infinity Machine).

Red threads lead to a 2026 U.S. Department of Defense agreement for classified networks reading "any lawful government purpose," with safety settings and filters adjusted at the government's request and no contractor veto (reported terms, The Information, Apr. 2026).

Below: a 2018 AI Principles strip ("no weapons, no surveillance") stamped DROPPED 2025, and a Project Mario 2016–2021 tag stamped ABANDONED.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms). It’s also concerning. 1/

PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU. Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

SSignal@signal.orgOct 3, 2025, 4:14 PM

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

📢NEW: 'Open' AI systems aren't open. The vague term, combined w frothy AI hype is (mis)shaping policy & practice, assuming 'open source' AI democratizes access & addresses power concentration. It doesn't.
