An oil portrait of a woman. The poem continues: “even if you like dirty sex, fast food, you are good broke and unproductive. Even in your shame, your life- stained nakedness. Even when you trip up, fail, forget to call. You are good even when even when.” Are we ever too old to hear those words? You are good. Our inner critic, inner parental voice, the random critical blasts from strangers on social media, memories of words spoken to us, memories of things we've done, ruminations about this we could have done better - there are a lot of parts needing to hear you are good. This line - your life-stained nakedness - oh my goodness, this hit me hard. Because we are all life-stained and those scarred parts need to feel acceptance maybe more than all of the others. For anyone reading this today and finding a bit of resonance, this is from me to you: YOU ARE GOOD. I am sitting here, typing this, celebrating your goodness. And before you hold up a cautioning hand and begin listing your foibles and mess-ups, I say to you even when, even when. xo
