#Question I have some friends thinking about moving from #Windows to #Linux

I personally prefer #Debian with #XFCE but I am long out of using #Windows so I have no more feeling how a Windows #Desktop looks like.

What would you suggest for Linux Newcomer as Desktop?

If anyone is curious, this is my main screen right now. #Linux #xfce

Screenshot of a generic-looking Linux desktop with two desktop bars, one at the top and one at the bottom. The top contains app launchers, system tray icons, weather and clock. The bottom has the usual buttons to access open applications (although they arent shown on the screenshot since the desktop is clean).

Started the day with ~45 notifications hitting my phone regarding changes being made on our #Xfce wiki.👀

It turns out a recently returned volunteer has really dug in & committed themseves to doing some much needed cleanup on some obsolete documentation.

So incredibly grateful to get some […]

I really love :nixos: #NixOS for stuff like this:

It has annoyed me for the longest time that :xfce: #XFCE's terminal doesn't make urls with unicode characters (i.e. German umlauts äöü) clickable properly. It also has a pretty small hard-coded list of allowed […]

$git diff showing an added nixpkgs overlay for xfce4-terminal applying a simple patch that allows hostanmes with unicode characters (\p{L} and \p{N}) instead of the upstream [[:ascii:]] and [[:graph:]] logic that does not seem to work.$

Would love to see some traction on smithay getting a new release.

Might go a long way on getting Xfce's Wayland work ingested into Debian.

Currently, we're relying on git-rev hash pinning which is a bit of a bummer.

Just a little hacking whilst at the hospital.

Amazing was:

- Graphical installer can now format with #btrfs and set up full-disk encryption with #LUKS (it previously couldn't)

Very annoying roadblocks after installation were:

- git not preinstalled
- in #xfce there's no archive manager preinstalled to open zip files
