My great-grandfather served with the Canadian Engineers as a lieutenant on the Western Front from 1915 to 1918. I've put his diary, letters, medals and photos online so his story can be read and explored.

This one's a bit of a stretch for day 10, missing, but all those people who died far from home, and their bodies never sent home in #WWI, well, I think it will do. #StainedGlass by Margaret Rope, Shrewsbury RC Cathedral, #Shropshire, for #31DaysOfGraves

Found this while pondering if you could refuse the order o participate in a firing squad.

Alan Ernest Bray - served with 1st Bn Duke of Edinburgh's (Wiltshire Regt), 7th Bde, 3rd Div on Western Front, 1915. Refusal to take part in firing squad at Dickebusche, Belgium, 5/1915.

“Frankly, I had enjoyed the war”. A page turner of a read, de Wiart lost an eye & a hand, & was wounded multiple times in #WWI. There’s lots of mentions of 🇦🇺 in both wars so useful reference. Oddly though no mention of his wife & kids or his VC.

As the 20th anniversary of key GWOT milestones approaches, I believe comparative historical frameworks bridging asymmetric conflict trauma can offer insights for both military historians and health researchers.

In 1917, the U.S. Navy built a battleship in the middle of Manhattan. It had guns, sailors, searchlights, and camouflage. It also had one problem: absolutely no way to float. Meet the USS Recruit. #WWI #History

This monument was erected by Ella's husband, and features a verse from the Tennyson poem Break, Break, Break.

Every now and then, I come across a reminder of the ordinary people who get caught up in historic events. This is a monument to Ella Osbourne in the city's Craigton Cemetery.

Unusually for such memorials, it doesn't just list the dead, but everyone who served. This means you can calculate the proportion of all who went who died, and it's 20%.

Easily overlooked, this is a memorial for the people from the Pollok House Estate in Glasgow who left to fight in the First World War.
