Last week I had the privilege of presenting part of my PhD research at the 4th World Seabird Conference in Tasmania #WSC4. Congratulations to the @worldseabirdunion.bsky.social for organising such an amazing event full of interesting discussions and networking opportunities. It was truly inspiring 🐧

En este #WSC4 hemos hablado sobre el seguimiento que se hace des de España y cómo nosotros, a raíz de las más de dos décadas de experiencia que tenemos en el tema, podemos contribuir a mejorar la situación.

Signs that I’m old based on what people told me this week at the #WSC4 conference:
- you’ve been an inspiration for my MSc ( the guy is now a post-doc).
- thanks for being a pioneer in this technique.

Gaia Dell’Ariccia describes how multi-species feeding aggregations of seabirds (work-ups) can be used to infer ecosystem health. 198 hrs of observational study counted >33,000 individuals in the Hauraki Gulf were used to understand species networks. #WSC4

Few better places to talk seabirds. Tasmania is Australia's Antarctic gateway, sits on the edge of the Southern Ocean, hosts vast seabird colonies and borders some of the fastest-warming waters on Earth. The challenges and the science are both on the doorstep.

Maíra Fessardi explores the complex relationship between ocean health and seabird health by investigating feather corticosterone levels, a signal of stress. Higher feather CORT was linked to a higher likelihood of breeding failure for Grey-faced petrels on Ihumoana. #WSC4

It began with a video taken by John Lamaris on the island he hails from in PNG that shows the dance of the frigate bird carried out by women in the community. These incredible women were doing traditional dance from the tops of trees!! #WSC4 🧪

Really stoked for the morning plenary today at #WSC4 where we’re learning about how Indigenous knowledge and culture is driving seabird conservation today - something way too often ignored by Western science. 🧪
