Try Your Best

“I don’t want to hurt you again” is a nice sentiment.
They’re hollow words, especially from her.
No one could ever promise that.
Somebody will go first.
Death is inevitable, just like hurt.

You should try me, maybe you’d be pleasantly surprised.
It’s all water off a duck’s ass, she once said.
I’m ten times more bullshit-resilient since then.
I put myself together with titanium kintsugi
from all the pieces I used to be.

The hurt little boy, the homeless teen,
the undiagnosed man, and all the rest of the
versions of me over the decades.
All unified now.

My answer to “I don’t want to ever hurt you again”
was “Try your best not to. It’s all anyone can ask.”
I would have done the same, but she only took four days
before she proved how hollow her words really were.

Profoundly Good

I’m profoundly good this morning.
The sun is in the sky, and the clouds look painted on.
I have no worries at all.
Which is supremely weird, as I’ve always been
a worrier and an overthinker.

It stinks when I pick up a load of horseshit,
on instinct, because I’d always lifted that burden before.
However, it was incredibly liberating as I immediately
dropped it like a hot rock when I realized what I’d done.

There is nothing left to think about in so many
situations in my life.
I’m moving along, even while sitting in place here.
I went down all the old roads I knew.
Those roads are still lacking what they always did.
So, I went off my map because I don’t know how you find
anything new and exciting without doing that.

I’m free and easy and headed back out into the world.
I don’t know what I’ll find but I won’t put preconceived
conditions on anything or anyone anymore.
I’ve visited so many places before, but I was mostly projecting onto them.
I hope I’m seeing them more clearly now.

I see myself differently now, and through that lens,
the world seems to have changed.
I’m sitting here loving on myself, and more importantly liking what I see.
I realized this morning that I’ve put down all my undue burdens.
I don’t even have anything to mistakenly pick up right now.
That has freed my mind.

In the still of the morning...
I’m profoundly good down to my bones
and through to my soul.
