I finally crawled up the hood and peeked in the windshield. Matt had a branch end impaled in his right eye. I eased back into the car and checked his pulse even though I knew it was useless. The unnatural angle of his head told me he had snapped his neck. I reached around into the back and pulled out my ski jacket. It took a few tugs because the accident had wedged it behind the seats, but I finally got it. I dragged myself out of the car and headed back to the road, hoping for a passerby. We’d only been driving about ten minutes. I figured I surely could walk to the resort.
