The secret is out. Now what? Make the truth change what your character has to face, lose, or decide. Give readers a reason to keep reading after the surprise.

A clue that only exists for the twist can give itself away. Give it another job in the scene, so the reader has a reason to notice it without knowing its full importance.

Let your reader think they’ve cracked it. A believable wrong answer gives them a theory worth trusting, built from evidence you actually put on the page.
