#WIPSnips 11. “Cousin”

Since barely anyone will read this today, here’s a longer and very rough scene from Book 4 of #WorldWithoutLove — yes, Book 4! This will be especially significant for those who read TIHID and GoRR.

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters

Even though the gryphon riders aided them in repelling Poseidon’s aquarium, Carys kept her grip on the dagger and summoned a heart-shaped bloodball on her free hand as the mysterious warriors slid down their mounts.

They wore scaled linothorax armour above plum chiton and himation, greaves, and vambraces; pieces that she could find in any army or wanderer endowed with enough coin. What drew her attention were their helmets and shields. The former was a Corinthian sort with an imposing dark plume, the mask painted a dark magenta, and the latter was emblazoned with a withered red rose encircled by a blood moon. Both patterns sent a message—one that Carys had never seen anywhere before, and judging by the Party’s confused stares, neither had they.

A man came forward and placed his spear and shield on the ground before taking another step. Though most of his gear was identical to the others, one piece stood out: a pair of pauldrons in the shape of a dog’s head. Slowly, he raised his arms and took off his helmet.

Curly black hair bounced free. When Carys met the man under the armour, her heart forgot to beat, and she only avoided falling thanks to Ishana. The man had a strong, rounded face with a well-trimmed beard, hazel eyes tempered with tenacity, and a ragged scar below his left eye to the tip of his nose—an old, unhealed scar. He had the perfect looks to play an Olympian hero, yet Carys remembered him as something else: a boy with a passion for sharing stories around the campfire and a kindness that persisted even as the darkness intruded on his home, but never on his heart.

“Cai…?”

“When modryb Arianell told me we’d meet again someday, I thought it was wishful thinking. But here we are.” He smiled. “How are you, cousin?”

... depends on her contract, huh? 🙂 Generally speaking, she won't eat outside, not by herself. She might grab a quick hot dog or sweet, though, if she feels like getting some distraction.

#NetherTouchedSareena

In #WorldWithoutLove, Briaca is eating at a fancy restaurant—some habits die hard 🧵

#WIPSnips 4. “Contract”

From This Is How Immortals Die, where “contract” is a central word precisely because of this contract Carys just signed.

I scanned his every word and found them true. Resolve and fierceness drummed in his heart, but the old man was right that warring against Pantheonic warriors would bring his and the girl’s demise. Also… I wouldn’t admit it, but his oath was one I could get behind. “Don’t fret, old man. Twenty thousand gold coins are incentive enough for me.”

From his other sleeve, the magician pulled out a second, yellowish parchment, a template which I had seen many times before. He unfurled the scroll and pulled a butter knife from his belt. I refused the joke of a weapon and used my dagger to cut my palm. Five drops dripped onto the paper. The old man repeated the gesture, pouring four drops. Contract signed. No going back now.

“May the Creator guide your path.” And that was the strangest thing he’d ever said to me. Had you truly allied with this cult, Aphrodite? Was that why no one could find their island?

Upgrading This Is How Immortals Die has been fun because it reminds me of stuff like this specific line of dialogue that basically tells the truth about the Vengeance... but I don't think anyone has made this connection yet 👀🤐

#SongsOfSeptember 29. Since I'm working on that wee update for This Is How Immortals Die, I'll share Carys' theme:

"You may feel no purpose nor a point for existing
It's all just conjecture and gloom
And there may not be meaning, so find one and seize it" 🎶

This song fits Carys so well overall, but this part, in particular, perfectly captures her internal journey in This Is How Immortals Die 💜

(Random TIHID post? Yes and no. I'm doing things with the first book, so if you want to read it, wait a bit 👀)

Part of the song Achilles Come Down by Gangs of Youth.

"You may feel no purpose
Nor a point for existing
It's all just conjecture and gloom
And there may not be meaning
So find one and seize it
Do not waste your self on this roof".

Lesbians. Always lesbians.

And while I welcome all species, I'd especially like more lesbian demons.

Both included in my (to-be-released) work, #ChroniclesOfTheRealms (and my #WorldWithoutLove series is also full of fierce lesbians) :3

In #WorldWithoutLove, whoever stumbles into Briaca will kneel and plead forgiveness while Briaca cringes and tries to assure them it's all right. When that doesn't work, she 🧵

In #WorldWithoutLove, Briaca would turn to Damario, her BFF. Qinyang... has no one, really. Though when things get tough, she does get in touch with a mentor figure 🧵

"Lustful erotic scenes go hand in hand with sword fights; love and hate are muddled-up, mixed-up terms that mean so much more than they do in our world. Having been born and raised in that gruesome world, it isn’t too big a surprise that Carys turned out the way she did: deliciously vile, sarcastic, and irresistibly rude. Calling her morally grey doesn’t..."
