Fanzines and World SF:

And then Rachel discovered Shards of Babel magazine and fell down a rabbit hole.
A major figure in the history of #worldsf and #SFinTranslation
"What western languages like French provide is a way-station for international sf going both east and west."
- Mark Purcell, "SF in French," Luna Monthly, December 1971
This was part of a multi-issue discussion about world SF and awards. With input from all over the world. In 1970. That decade was really something for #worldSF and #SFinTranslation. (See Japan's world SF conference & the creation of the World SF organization).
Luna Monthly was talking about international sf awards 6 years before the formation of the World SF organization...keeps pushing the timeline earlier!
"National awards & a distinguished real international award should be separated. The present Hugo and Nebula awards are only American awards. [Also,] The creation of an international theoretical/critical journal is by all means necessary."
- Peter Kuczka (Hungary), Luna Monthly, Aug 1970
ICYM, I've been reading and posting mini-summaries of the stories in AfroSF here over the past month. They're wonderfully varied and deal with everything from terraforming to globalization, from robot bureaucrats to population control...GOOD STUFF.
Luna Monthly ππβ€οΈβ€οΈππ
Writing an "International Scene" month after month. Before the internet. I am humbled and impressed.
Apparently Luna Monthly had a special section in their magazine in the 70s devoted to "the International Scene"!
Anyone have scans of the World SF Newsletter #9-11 and 13-17? Thanks!
βWorld SF is, we feel, a step in the right direction. Its General Meeting should be an exercise in communication, a bridging of a vast gap, a cross-fertilization." - from "World SF General Meeting 1983: A Proposal For Zagreb, Yugoslavia, June 21-25, 1983"
Citing the Webster's New World Dictionary (1974) population numbers, B. Ogorelec says, "It seems to be there are that many CARS in Zagreb, judging by the problem I have trying to find a parking space downtown." π
Reading this proposal for a World SF meeting in Zagreb, Yugoslavia from 1983 (sent to World SF org members) and it is something else- funny, whimsical, confident.
