#WordWednesday: "verschlimmbessern" (German). To make something worse by trying to improve it: verschlimmern (worsen) plus verbessern (improve). Every learner who has rewritten a sentence that started out correct knows this verb. ✏️ #LanguageLearning

It's time for another #WordWednesday! If you really knew how to work the dance floor, they called you this. What do you think? Should we bring it back from the 1920s to the 2020s?

Word Wednesday: today is International Translation Day. Italian has a phrase for the whole profession's dilemma: "traduttore, traditore," translator, traitor. Every translation betrays the original a little to serve the reader. ⚖️ #WordWednesday #LearnItalian

Little flipping b*tches (wentelteefjes): French toast. The word teef used to indicate a certain form of pastry or cake, but these days, it sounds a bit odd. Perhaps we should go with the French: pain perdu, or 'lost bread'.

Word Wednesday: "Fernweh" (German). Literally far-sickness. The ache for a place you have never been, the opposite of homesickness. Some people are homesick for somewhere they have not found yet. ✈️ #WordWednesday #LearnGerman

Today's word is more of a pronunciation issue. The first time I heard my daughter talk of a Mento, I paused. I'd never realised Mentos could be plural. I looked it up, and officially, 1 sweet is still a Mentos. But in Holland, we pronounce it Men-Toss. Chew on that for a while.
