This mixed-media encaustic work for #WingsWatersWays ties together the three realms herons move through: earth, air, water.

The entire work is visible at the Birds of Vermont Museum through the end of October (unless it is sold). You can see more of her work at www.instagram.com/DeniseMarieL...

#FeaturedArtist Katrina Meyers collaged "the Heron and the Reeds" with painted papers and layers, evoking both the habitat of the heron and its varied connections. There is always something changing, moving, reaching, even when the heron is impossibly still. #WingsWatersWays

A collage of painted papers in pale colors of spring in a marsh. Painted cattails stand at the left; a swath of blue indicates the water; a purple-blooming marsh plant occupies the upper right. A heron, assembled from collaged papers painted with dry brush work in blues and greens, stalks toward the lower right. A blue banner covers part of the lower third, reading "Katrina Meyers • the Heron and the Reeds" in white letters. Art copyright © Katrina Meyers and shown with permission.

Emerging #FeaturedArtist Ruby M shares her broad perspective on Vermonters, rivers, and a Bald Eagle interacting—indeed, sharing the waterway—in her piece "Trout River" for #WingsWatersWays.

A Bald Eagle carries a fish toward the viewer as it flies over a river in which humans are fishing, swimming, and boating. Green forests and blue mountains fill the background. "Trout River" Art copyright © Ruby M. and shared with permission.

#FeaturedArtist Lori Hinrichsen (@lorihinrichsenvermontartist) repurposed old atlases' images of Vermont waterways into moveable birds for this installation work in #WingsWatersWays. It's whimsical and practical, hopeful and full of memory, both still and ready to fly.

Six simplified bird shapes made from old maps are clipped by a small clothespin to a clear filament. This is a portion of a larger installation. Each bird has one wing that can move, as well as contrasting (many are brightly-colored) beak. Art copyright © by Lori Hinrichsen, "Looking Skyward", and shown with permission.

This is the first year we've seen Bob Spear's work directly inspire a work for #WingsWatersWays. Grace Juneau created this loon family in the poses and mood of the first carving you see as you enter the museum.

And yes, this IS that small (the carved wooden ones are life-size).

#FeaturedArtist

A small ceramic artwork is held up in the fingers of a hand: the work is no wider across than an adult palm, and no taller than her pinky. The ceramic shows a family of loons on a bit of lake: an adult and a baby swimming, a baby on the back of the adult, and an adult posturing with wings spread. "Gavia Immer, Common Loons" is by artist Grace Juneau.

Lizzy Sheldon is today's #FeaturedArtist, and she's playing with words as much as oil paint in this work for #WingsWatersWays.

The "Queen Fisher" comes to the #WingsWatersWays show from #FeaturedArtist Jo Anne Wazny. She writes of inspiration "from the texture of fur and feather to dramatic skies.... The diversity and complexity of life is astounding."

Art copyright © Jo Anne Wazny, shown with permission.

A portion of a painted Belted Kingfisher female, with stylized patterns on the chest and in the background. The Kingfisher—a blue, white and rust-feathered bird—look over its shoulder to the viewer's right. The background "sky" is orange-yellow with a pattern reminiscent of ripples on the lower part. A dark rock with grain-like patterns curling over it and a darker rusty-soil form the remaining part of the background. A dark blue banner with white letters reads "Jo Anne Wazny • Queen Fisher". #FeaturedPhotographer Gail Curtin tells us she seeks to "not only the beauty and charm of the world around us but also the humor and unique moments that make life so special." This photo of a cormorant does that, bridging a moment between the bird's life and human spaces.

#WingsWatersWays

A cormorant stands on a curved metal structure above calm water. It appears to be late afternoon in fall, as the light is amber and fall foliage as well as the bird and metal arch are reflected in the slightly rippling water around. A blue banner with white letters reads "Gail Curtin • Born Important" (the name of the photographer and the work). Image copyright © Gail Curtin and used with permission.

The Heron appears to symbolize connections between #WingsWatersWays for many of our artists in this show. #FeaturedArtist Marcia Vogler @MarciaVogler uses this in her constructed accordion book/triptych (one panel of which is shown here).

One panel of a constructed accordion-fold book, showing a Great Blue Heron standing in reeds. It is constructed of collaged and painted papers, built up in a shadowbox style. The work is called "On Seeing the Heron: Three Wishes", copyright © Marcia Vogler, excerpt shown with permission.

Red Knots (Calidris canutus) may be observed in Vermont (if you are lucky and persistent) as they migrate.

#FeaturedArtist Chris Selin has caught three in flight in her painting for #WingsWatersWays, as they wing across a wind-roughened edge of Lake Champlain, with mountains in the background.

Portion of a watercolor painting showing three Red Knots flying from right to left against a loose background of blues, greens, and ochres suggesting waves. Red Knots are a shorebird with a rusty chin and breast, and brownish-gray wings. Painting "Sailors of the Shore" by Chris Selin, and shown with permission.

We welcome emerging artist Julian to #WingsWatersWays, and today's #FeaturedArtist. Julian has exhibited in our show before; their work reflects our show themes with both clarity and a sense of captured motion.

We look forward to seeing how their art develops in future!

"Time Flies", a watercolor of a Sandhill Crane rising by Callie Hastings, carries themes of migration, urgency, and—perhaps—dawn and hope.

These cranes migrate, often using river valleys as key stopover points. For more, visit www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sandhi...

#WingsWatersWays #FeaturedArtist

A watercolor painting of a Sandhill Crane in flight, rising from lower left to upper right, carrying a large pocket watch on a chain from its beak. The background is uncolored paper at the top, and a pale blue surface with a meandering darker blue river-shaped band below. Art "Time Flies" copyright © Callie Hastings and shown with permission.

#FeaturedArtist Kristen Donegan works in clay, paint and fiber, exploring themes connecting nature, myth and self reflection. In that space, her waterfowl of "Diving" ask "what do we discover, beneath?"

#WingsWatersWays

Two blue-tinted duck-like waterfowl are painted onto a flat board. The are head-down, diving; the boundary of the water is indicated by a lightening of colors. The birds are bridged by a gold-and-pale blue flower-like shape, connecting them. A blue panel with white letters holds the name of the artist and the work: "Kristen Donegan • Diving". Art copyright © Kristen Donegan and shown with permission.

Todd Cummings, today's #FeaturedArtist, uses graphic design and digital illustration to share a early morning autumn moment with loons. The birds' quiet grace contrasts eloquently with the change of seasons. You can find more of Todd's work at ForestCityDesigns.com

#FeaturedArtist Sarah Ashe works with fabrics and more as she creates sculptures, art pieces, and (in this case) wall hangings.

Her birds are opportunities for discovery as they bridge boundaries between night and day, air and water. Find them in the #WingsWatersWays art show, or at sarahashe.com

A fabric collage of golds, blues, yellows and reds. Birds and plants are stitched onto overlapping and stitched fabric panels. This work copyright © Sarah Ashe is called "Night and Day" and shown with permission.

This osprey by emerging artist Caelyn White is a careful mix of a static wooded wetland below a soaring raptor. We are honored to be the first to exhibit her work in #WingsWatersWays.

Caelyn works in many other media, some of which can be found in the museum's gift shop.

When you walk by this watercolor, you observe geese in spring; when you walk the other way, it's geese in fall. This single image cannot show it all!

Visit us to be amazed by #FeaturedArtist Judy Brook; visit Dead Creek WMA to be astounded by live geese that inspired this work for #WingsWatersWays.

A portion of a painting on accordion-folded paper. This view shows four white snow geese clearly from above (and many too far away to resolve) as they migrate over a meandering blue river and green, yellow, and brown agricultural fields. Words overlay the image: "Judy Brook • Spring/Fall Migration: a Bird's Eye View of Dead Creek WMA." Artwork copyright © Judy Brook and shown with permission.

This is NOT a reflection in 2 directions but 2 dabbling ducks. By #FeaturedPhotographer Jake Levin, this offers both the reality of a duck's life and the surprise of symmetry.

This image is cropped; find the full work at our #WingsWatersWays art show.

Find more of Jake's work at BirdsByJake.com

Two brown-feathered dabbling ducks with green specula are inverted in still water. The lighting makes the water amber; the inversion hides the ducks' heads and upper bodies in the water.

#FeaturedArtist Sarah Rosedahl asks us to notice where birds are and when.

It's true that osprey young have fledged by now. Many have begun their migration. Look for them in the skies and near water. Next spring, watch the large, stick-built nests for reuse!
