Colour lithograph of two German soldiers in the pre-1909 blue uniform. The caption identifies them as engineers (Pionier-Battalion Nr. 9). The man on the left has his back turned to the viewer, displaying a field pack including a cooking kit attached to the backpack and a canteen worn on the belt. Both were standardised items holding 1/2 and 3 litres respectively and were used in field cooking.
