My 2026 #LFF is off to a fantastic start with the gala premiere of Martin McDonagh’s #WildHorseNine. A melancholic look at legacy and if our actions - no matter how bad - make the world a better place. Malkovich & Rockwell are on top form but I wish McDonagh could write better female characters.

Crackling with his signature bantery dialogue & centring on a pair of emotionally & morally stunted men holed up in a remote location, #WildHorseNine plays like a McDonagh greatest hits set. However while his latest film may feel familiar, McDonagh delivers his most potent & thoughtful effort yet

Gorgeous night at #HomeMCR watching #WildHorseNine as part of the #LFF satellite screenings.

Immediately one of my favourite McDonagh films 📽

12. WILD HORSE NINE (dir. Martin McDonagh)
Crackling with his trademark dialogue & centring on a pair of sad, morally stunted men, #WildHorseNine plays like a McDonagh megamix. But while the it feels familiar, the director shows growth by offering his most potent & thoughtful effort to date

Been looking forward to this for a while and it did not disappoint. John Malkovich on brilliant form.

Martin McDonagh in fine form. Dark and funny, this was such an enjoyable treat. Very much in the vein of my favourite McDonagh film (In Bruges) with Malkovich having a blast. Rockwell shines but shout out to Steve Buscemi who has the line reading of the year 😂. #WildHorseNine #LFF

Loved that, 5 stars! Did not have Sam Rockwell down as an eye actor; reminded me of Cruise in Rain Man with sidelong glances in arguments and moody looks into middle distance. Perfect rhythm in the writing and from Malkovitch. Not sure Davis used vintage glass but it looked like it #WildHorseNine

Adding the ninth horse allows for 362,880 possible configurations, vastly superior to the previous best set by William Peter Blatty in 1980 #WildHorseNine

#WildHorseNine is another hilarious escapade with acerbic wit. Malkovich owns the film but Rockwell offers great support. Lacks the dark melancholy of his best work but it’s full of classic exchanges and terrific scenery.

#WildHorseNine could be the film that finally wins John Malkovich his Oscar.

A terrifically comedic, emotional, well written film that is a hugely enjoyable piece of movie entertainment.

Sam Rockwell is also on top form on one of the films of the year.

#LFF

#WildHorseNine is an absolute triumph. Boasting towering performances from Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich and a sombre, yet witty and uplifting screenplay, the film delivers a tour-de-force of brilliance.

It’s pure cinema, with dark overtones tempered by brilliant humour. #LFF

McDonagh’s latest film has Malkovich and Rockwell shooting the breeze as CIA agents in 1973 on Easter Island.

#WildHorseNine is another Martin McDonagh two-hander special. Hard to call it his best film right off the bat, but I can’t deny John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell make a compelling case for the most watchable on screen duo of the year. Ben Davis’s cinematography is no slouch either.
