While most humans were focused on finding agates, we were intrigued by the geology/geomorphology at the edge of the beach, where great mounds of clay were exposed, eaten away by erosion & winter storms. We left small proof-of-concept pinch-pot for others to discover.

A bit of eroded slope at the edge of the beach reveals reddish clay deposits, breaking off in clean chunks, practically ready for pottery making!A large mound of land made nearly entirely of clay, the size of a small house, erodes at the edge of Lake Superior. Reddish clay can be seen under the overhang of soil and tree roots, which are slowly drooping towards the beach. You can tell it's a slow process by the fact that decent sized trees hanging over the edge have had time to curve back upwards towards the sky. In the background, the rest of the forest glows yellow in autumn splendor.A single footprint, from Tonttu the husky, is made in damp clay that has washed out of the slope on the edge of Lake Superior. If you zoom in, you can see the individual dimples of his foot pads, with streaks in a series of parallel lines to the top and right where his paw stroked the ground before planting in, and two deep claw marks at his middle two toes.A small, rough pinch pot made of wild clay sits on a wide smooth gray rock in front of the wild clay deposit shown in the first photo of this series. A single rounded pebble has been placed in the pot. One overhanging root/branch curves across the scene above.

The clay from Vancouver lake was finally dry enough to wedge!! Threw a little cup to test fire! Hoping it doesn't melt now that the sand has been removed!

I'll be back soon with the test tiles, spreadsheets, and other hard data you clay needs are looking for.

It's a red clay! Nothing but heat, and that dark, grey muck transformed into this very pumpkiny orange terracotta color. #pottersofbluesky #redclay #wildclay #raw #experiment #testing

My deep grey wild clay actually fires to this bright brick color. Extremely porous, I think I might actually use the rest of the bucket to build a pizza oven! The wild clay had the consistency of kinetic sand, I am surprised it held a shape at all. I decided to mix in my porcelain until it became workable just to compare. This is how those bars of clay started out! The wild clay is a deep, dark grey as to be almost black, and combined with my porcelain looks about like average stoneware! 😂
