Doctors who read bodies like books. 🩺

Dark card with wine-red divider lines. Excerpt from the original fic The Practice of Dr. Hale. Full text: "Take off your shirt," Dr. Hale said. Su Se looked at him, then drew his hand back. He said nothing, and, as in the consulting room, unbuttoned the shirt one button at a time, and Dr. Hale began to examine him by the hotel's light. The left clavicle carried a healing fracture, more than two weeks old, the ends well aligned. Two ribs below it bore a similar injury, older. He knew this body's penetrating wounds, its blade wounds, the marks left by tissue intervention. This time it was impact: enormous force concentrated in a very small area, a blunt injury. Dr. Hale asked how it had happened. "Combat drills," Su Se said. "A fracture, sparring with someone. It's been dealt with." Some deliberate administration of pain when the patient is silent and stoic. And of course, the doctor is such a predator. 🩺

Dark card with wine-red divider lines. Excerpt from the original fic The Practice of Dr. Hale. Full text: He took the dead tissue in thin deliberate portions. Each time the forceps found a living margin, the whole limb answered under the drape with a deep involuntary shudder, held down by the strap, translated upward through the body until it arrived at the hands. The right hand had closed on the wrist cuff's edge, fingers curling around the band that held it to the table. He watched the knuckles pale at each passage and settle between them. The face had fixed itself on the middle distance, conducting its breathing with the discipline of a metronome. He found his rhythm adjusting to it. A puncture that wanted two seconds took four. A press to judge the tissue's response went a degree deeper than judgment required, and held there. When the blade met a nerve the infiltration had not fully reached, the young man's wrist jerked back in its cuff, and the strap's catch clicked once. "Breathe through it," he said, in the low settled voice his patients trusted. "You are doing very well." The young man took a moment, and looked away.
