If you're thinking - wasn't #bienstag yesterday? Well, it's #waspWednesday and this clearly isn't a photo of a bumblebee, it's a photo of a really tiny wasp perched on a petal at top. The bee's just there for scale. #Derbyshire, October 2026.

Close-up of a red and purple fuchsia flower hanging downwards, with a blonde, fluffy bumblebee burying its head in the purple bell of the flower, forelegs grasping it tightly, rear legs with tightly packed masses of yellow pollen. On one of the splayed-out red petals at top, a tiny bronze wasp sits in the autumnal sunshine.

For #waspWednesday - from August, an adorable Isodontia elegans, elegant grass-carrying wasp at #Seattle's #waspHeaven in #VolunteerPark, with her (or one of her sisters) building a nest for her babies with the dried grass, between the bricks of the water tower...

A Paper Wasp on the boneset for #WaspWednesday. Polistes fuscatus. #WorldWaspWeek #bugsky #nativeplants 🌱

Four different views of a male Northern Paper Wasp (I think) feeding on white boneset flowers. Here we see the back of the wasp. The curved tips of the antennae identify him as a male. He has a black thorax with one white horizontal stripe and two vertical stripes below it. His abdomen has curved tan stripes alternating with black stripes. The black stripes have concentric circles of rust and tan on each side that get smaller and disappear near the end of the abdomen. The wings are a dark rusty brown. The wasp seen from one side. His head is black on the side and his legs are a reddish-gold color. The wasp has his face in a wispy white boneset flower, his antennae folded down in front of the flower, the tips curved like shepherd's crooks. The wasp grips a flower and drinks from it facing the camera, showing his pale yellow face and khaki tan eyes. Tall Boneset, Eupatorium altissimum. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

It’s #waspwednesday - last week I saw my first female giant ichneumonid (genus Megarhyssa) - so cool! Was hoping she had found a target to drill into the wood with her ovipositor but she just flew off.

Pretty sure I saw another one in flight this week, I better keep an eye out…

Wasp on tree trunk amid bracket fungus. Mostly red with yellow and black bands, narrow dark wings, arched abdomen, red eyes. Needle-like ovipositor sticking straight back is longer than she is.

Blue-winged scoliid wasp on late boneset for #WaspWednesday

#BugSky #WorldWaspWeek2026 #Scoliidae #Bloomscrolling

A black wasp with shiny black wings that look dark blue in the light, with a long abdomen that is mostly medium brown with gold fringed hairs between each segment and two pale yellow spots on the top brown abdominal segment. The wasp is walking and feeding on the flowers of boneset, which has compound corymbs (branched clusters of flowers arranged so that the top of the cluster appears flat) of small heads of many tiny white flowers.

Happy #waspwednesday!
Here is a crabronid wasp (Liris argentatus) hunting for crickets in my yard this past weekend.

Wasp with big black eyes, dark grey antennae extended in front of its grey face, black and grey legs with lots of spikes and blue-black wings folded over its body, crawling over dead leaves and twigs.
