#FridayFrocks #Waistlines - This evening gown, c.1818 - 1824 is made from semi-transparent silk gauze. The late 1810s were a transitional period; waistlines were still above the natural level, but beginning to descend.

Full-length silk ball gown dating from c.1818–1824, displayed on a mannequin against a plain grey background. The gown is made from olive-toned patterned silk with a high Empire waistline, square neckline, and short cream puffed sleeves. Decorative cream satin scallops trimmed with green embellishment adorn the lower skirt. A close-up image shows the gathered puff sleeve and intricate white silk trim around the neckline. #FridayFrocks – Autumn sees our attention turn to #Waistlines. Here we have a silk brocade bodice dating from the 1780s. The bodice is heavily boned so that it forms a fashionable cone shape.

The cream-coloured bodice features long sleeves, a square neckline, fine vertical stripes, and small brocaded floral motifs. The front is fitted with decorative green ribbon lacing, while the back has a pointed, tailored shape.
