Nona's (のな) 'steamed chestnut yōkan' (栗蒸し羊羹), with its slight brandy taste, is perfect as a teatime snack!🍷😋

They may look like tiny cauliflowers, but Oimatsu's (老松) 'Tanbaji' (丹波路 'Tanba Road') actually mimic unripe chestnuts.
Tanba-no-kuni (丹波国) was an old province, covering part of modern Kyōto and Hyōgo Prefectures. It was long famed for its chestnuts.

Kameya Tomonaga's (亀屋友永) cute little 'yakiguri shōro' (焼栗松露) contain chopped pieces of chestnut. 'Yakiguri' (焼栗) are roasted chestnuts, and shōro (松露) is a type of edible fungus...which the sweets resemble.

Nagasaki's cake has a European origin 🍰

Castella is a soft sponge cake brought to Japan by Portuguese traders. Nagasaki developed its own style and made it a Japanese classic.

🪻🌸A FEAST OF FLOWERS🌼🌷

Mirroring the '7 Herbs of Spring' (七草の節句), consumed for good health in January, come the '7 Flowers of Autumn' (秋の七草/秋の七種). These plants are mostly a feast for the eyes, but also prove inspiration for Kyōto's confectioners🙌🤤✨

🌕🐇BEFORE THE SWALLOWS LEAVE🌾🌰

In the traditional calendar September 2nd–7th is known as 'kokumono sunawachi minoru' (禾乃登 'rice ripens'). This bountiful season is marked by a rich variety of sweets inspired by sunsets, the arrival of harvest time, and the '7 Flowers of Autumn'.
