Not a glamour shot, but ridiculously tall and thin. I give you a great egret as a #BirdSupermodel for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme.

Per Helen @helenbennett.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BirdSupermodel. Any bird looking like it's posing for a magazine cover. Alt: #UnsungBirds any underrated bird.
#ColorADay #BlueTue
#Woodstork #wadingBird #birds #nature #wildlife #thelittlethings #ECK #photography

A white Woodstork with its head turned to the left is standing in the grasses and wild flowers along the edge of the blue lake.

Interesting information :
Large, white Wood Storks wade through
southeastern swamps and wetlands. It's a good flier, soaring on thermals with neck and legs outstretched. This bald-headed wading bird stands just over 3 feet tall, towering above almost all other wetland birds. It slowly walks through wetlands with its long, hefty bill down in the water feeling for fish and crustaceans. This ungainly looking stork roosts and nests in colonies in trees above standing water. Wood Storks occur only in a few areas in the United States, so to get a look at one, head to a wetland preserve or wildlife area along the coast in Florida, South Carolina, or Georgia. Wood Storks tend to be busily foraging with their head down and body held horizontally, but their large size should help them stand out amongst the other pale herons, ibises, and egrets in wetlands even if you can't see their hefty bill. If they aren't foraging in areas with standing water, check nearby trees for groups of roosting Wood Storks, or look up in the sky for soaring birds with black-and-white wings. They are mostly silent, but during the breeding season, sounds of begging chicks might help you find a colony.

Per Helen @helenbennett.bsky.social, today’s #BirdOfTheDay is #BestBeaks, striking colours, bold profiles or interesting shaped beaks.

#Ibis #wadingBird #birds #nature #wildlife #Florida #thelittlethings #ECK #photography

A head and neck photo of a White Ibis, which has a distinctive down-curved red-orange bill and light blue eyes. Blue water in the background.

Interesting information:
This ibis is almost entirely white, save for the black-tipped wings and brilliant reddish pink legs and bill. The bare skin around their blue eyes is also reddish pink. Juveniles (fall through winter) are brown above and white below with a streaky brown neck. The legs and bill of juveniles are orange-pink. Immatures (first summer birds) are splotchy brown and white above as they molt into adult plumage.
An ibis is a medium-sized wading bird with a long neck, spindly legs, and a distinctive long, downward-curving bill. Colors vary by species. The White Ibis is brilliant white with black wingtips, the Scarlet Ibis is vivid red, and the Glossy Ibis has dark, iridescent chestnut and purple feathers. They live in warm regions worldwide, frequenting shallow wetlands, marshes, lakes, mangroves, and mudflats.
Ibises are carnivorous. They eat aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans (like crabs and shrimp), insects, small fish, and occasionally small frogs or snakes. Ibises are highly social birds. They forage, fly, and breed in large, sometimes vast, colonies.
They usually build compact stick nests low in trees, shrubs, or dense reeds near water, often sharing nesting spaces with herons or spoonbills.

#SnowyEgret #wadingBird #birds #nature #wildlife #thelittlethings #ECK #photography #ClassicMono #B&W

A black and white photograph of a Snowy Egret that is standing in the shallows of the beach with a soft wave braking in the background.

Interesting information:
Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands. Male and female Snowy Egrets take turns incubating their eggs. As one mate takes over for the other, it sometimes presents a stick, almost as if passing a baton. Both parents continue caring for the young when they hatch. During the breeding season, adult Snowy Egrets develop long, wispy feathers on their backs, necks, and heads. In 1886 these plumes were valued at $32 per ounce, which was twice the price of gold at the time. Plume-hunting for the fashion industry killed many Snowy Egrets and other birds until reforms were passed in the early twentieth century. The recovery of shorebird populations through the work of concerned citizens was an early triumph and helped give birth to the conservation movement. Snowy Egrets sometimes mate with other heron species and produce hybrid offspring. They have been known to hybridize with Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons, and Cattle Egrets.

#scape to the quiet of the #lake #GreatEgret #wadingBird #birds #wildlife #nature #photography #thelittlethings #ECK 🕊️💙

A white Great Egret is standing along the shoreline of a lake. Tall green grasses in the foreground and blue water reflecting wispy clouds.
Interesting information:
The Great Egret Feature long necks, long legs, and dagger-like bills. They stand motionless or slowly stalk in shallow fresh or saltwater, waiting to strike fish, frogs, and other small aquatic prey with a sudden jab.
A tall, stately white wader of quiet waters. Common, especially in the south, it may wander far to the north in late summer. Nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion, the Great Egret made a comeback after early conservationists put a stop to the slaughter and protected its colonies; as a result, this bird became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

🐦 Redshanks can be identified by their distinctive long, bright red-orange legs. 🧐 "Shank" is an old word for legs.📜 So they're named for their appearance!🪞
