This is the second work I've read by the remarkable John L. Harmon. There's a lot of pain and self-pity in this book of poems and intermissions- -all of it understandable and all of it moving. Yet for someone who writes, "Perhaps this is my destiny/To swim in mediocrity/To slide into obscurity," there is much here to remember, recommend, and rave about! Harmon's poetry is crystalline and, therefore, accessible. But the addition of his "intermissions" allow the reader to live and feel the backstory behind the poems. Anger, tenderness, sadness, and ultimately, serenity pervade these poems. Harmon's "happy pantomime eyes" don't seem like a "disguise" to me. The tenacity and truth required to write such a gem of a book shine as an inspiration to us all.
