✍🏽 Virgil (c. 70-19 BCE) spent the last 11 years of his life writing the Aeneid, only to die before it was completed. He requested that it be destroyed upon his death, but Augustus had other plans, and the book was published with minor edits soon after Virgil’s death.

“The gates of hell are open night and day;
Smooth the descent, and easy is the way:
But to return, and view the cheerful skies,
In this the task and mighty labor lies.”
- The Aeneid by Virgil

In Dante's Inferno, traitors were condemned to the ice of the 9th circle, a complete absence of divine warmth, love & community. The traitors were unable to move or act, reflecting how betrayal freezes the human soul and destroys agency. Painting by Gustave Courtois (1879)

she sobbed…
Dido, trying to raise her heavy eyes once more, failed.
deep in her heart the wound kept rasping, hissing on…
Her gaze wavering into the high skies, she looked
for a ray of light and when she glimpsed it, moaned…
