Vicrorian Townhouses lining Westbourne Gardens in the Dowanhill area of Glasgow. Built in the 1870s, the gothic-arched windows on the first floor are unusual for a residential property from this time period.

For me, they're also much more practical than curtains as they help stop outside noise coming in, and are great for keeping the light out during the summer months (when it might not be dark until 11pm, and is light again by 3am).
It's often said that Glasgow's Victorian tenements and townhouse are difficult and expensive to keep warm because their large windows let out too much heat. However, this only happens because one crucial feature has been removed from them.
