The Gates of Horn and Ivory
#illustration #illumination #vellum #watercolor #alchemy #sketchbook

An scanned image of an illumination on vellum. There are two gates or archways that form a triangle with the picture plane. The column that form these archways are a swirling mixture of ochres, black, and white. Through the gates flow curls of mist in metallic silver. Above this main subject, there is the motto “Credendo Vides.” Below the gates and coming from what may be a path or ribbons from the gates are a series of marks that may be words.
