Watkins Glen became the first permanent home of #Formula1 in the United States, but did you know the track was designed from the outset to host a major race like the #USGP ?

#OnThisDay 50 years ago James Hunt won the #USGP after a race-long duel with Jody Scheckter’s 6-wheeled Tyrrell, here leading Hunt’s McLaren. Jody led more laps than James did, but James was ahead at the end, thereby closing to 3 points shy of Lauda’s total (65 versus 68). Next came Fuji...
Jackie Stewart, Ken Tyrrell & François Cevert look happy in this pic, don’t they? Well, they should: the Tyrrell drivers had just finished 1st & 2nd in the ’72 #USGP, which took place at Watkins Glen #OnThisDay 54 years ago. Oh & Uncle Ken had thereby trousered a then-record US$97,500!
#OnThisDay in ’74 Carlos Reutemann won the #USGP, from the pole, in this rakishly handsome Brabham BT44 (pic: Bernard Cahier). But, apart from Reutemann’s triumph, today we should also remember 25-year-old Helmuth Koinigg, who lost his life that day in a brutal accident in only his 2nd #F1 GP.
#OnThisDay in ’64 Graham Hill (BRM; pic) won #USGP at Watkins Glen - the 2nd of his 3 consecutive #F1 GP wins there. 2nd was John Surtees (NART Ferrari) & 3rd was Jo Siffert (Rob Walker Brabham).
#OnThisDay in ’65, on a cold, wet & windy day, Graham Hill (BRM) won the #USGP at Watkins Glen, from pole position, driving fastest lap. #AnorakFact: it was his 3rd consecutive #USGP victory.
#OnThisDay in ’77 pole man James Hunt (McLaren M26) won the #USGP at Watkins Glen from Mario Andretti (Lotus 78), but the early star of a wet race was Hans-Joachim Stuck (pic), who led in spectacular fashion in this Brabham BT45B until he spun off on lap 15.
Fab pic of the Lotus of Jim Clark on the grid at the ’66 #USGP, which Clark won #OnThisDay 60 years ago. Clark qualified P2. Out of shot is Jack Brabham’s pole-sitting Brabham. Just visible is the nose cone of John Surtees’ Cooper-Maserati.
Dominant #USGP victory at Watkins Glen #OnThisDay in ’78 by Carlos Reutemann (Ferrari 312T3), his 4th #F1 GP win of the season & his 2nd of the season on US soil - because he’d also won at Long Beach in April.
Lovely pic of pole man Graham Hill leading Jim Clark in their Lotus 49s in the early stages of the #USGP at Watkins Glen #OnThisDay in ’67. By race’s end the positions had been reversed, Clark leading Hill home to record a Lotus 1-2.
#OnThisDay 23 years ago Heinz-Harald Frentzen raced this Sauber C22 to 3rd place in the 2003 #USGP at Indy - his 18th & last #F1 podium finish. The race was won by Michael Schumacher (Ferrari F2003-GA).
I was there too, as a spectator. #USGP at @ims
Sebastian Vettel made his F1 debut driving for BMW Sauber at the 2007 United States Grand Prix, substituting for the injured Robert Kubica. He scored a point by finishing 8th.
(1/2) The Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course was the venue. Concerns over Michelin tyre safety led to all 14 Michelin-shod cars withdrawing after the formation lap, leaving only the six...
