Brooklyn Heights, 2020 #BelieveInFilm #UltraMax400

Another shot from that day in 2020 in Brooklyn Heights when the light was spectacular. This building is a carriage house, built in 1901, which seems a little late for a carriage house to me. Anyway, the carriage entrance was converted into a huge bay window, and it now serves as a big single-family home. A listing from 2025 put the rent at $19,000/month. This is the fanciest street in Brooklyn Heights, with a bunch of celebrities living in the condominiums one block away. There are a couple of signs protesting the construction they wanted to do on the BQE across the street, which I assume will be put back now that they announced that they want to do pretty much the same work again now.

A brick wall.

You would think that a photo of a brick wall would make a boring photograph, but you would be wrong. It’s an awesome photograph, and that’s because I am an awesome photographer. So sit back, and contemplate this photograph. The colors are spectacular. The composition is impeccable. The light on that day was perfect. And it’s quite soothing to look at this photo. I hope I made your day a little better.

A fancy window to a fancy brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. A fancy planter sits on a fancy window will, with fancy autumn-themed flowers and plants carefully arranged in it. The sun strike the scene at the perfect angle.

West Village, 2020 #BelieveInFilm #UltraMax400

In Greenwich Village, on an old building, a window. And it’s a quite a fancy window. It was constructed during a time when people who made buildings paid attention to the little details. Along the top of the window, the lintel has a fancy fleur de lis embedded into it. And along the bottom, there is a fancy zig-zag pattern carved into the sill. Except that this fancy window is no longer a window. The pane has been covered over with a sheet metal, because someone decided that whoever is on the other side of this wall no longer needs to look outside onto the street. There is a tiny circular exhaust vent at the bottom of the former window, and there is some kind of box-like structure, maybe another exhaust vent, at the top.

This whole building has been sitting empty for almost a decade. Since this building is landmarked, it cannot be torn down. The owner at some point submitted plans to do a gut reno, and turn the interior into boring office space, but that never happened, and now it just sits there, probably out of spite.

A fancy-looking garage door along the side of a fancy modern building in the West Village.

Red Hook, 2020 #BelieveInFilm #UltraMax400

A chainlink fence blocks off a vacant lot in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Behind the chainlink are pieces of particle board, to block off the view. Creeping vines cover a portion of the fence. In some spots, you can see some of the leaves starting to turn red, indicating that this scene is on the precipice of autumn. In fact, this photo was taken six years ago to the day, 20 Sept, 2020. If you go to this same spot today, you will probably see *no* red leaves, giving a hint of how the climate has changed even over six years.

Red Hook, 2020 #BelieveInFilm #UltraMax400

On a street in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a home, covered in red vinyl siding and with a white door, sits next to an empty lot. The lot’s fencing is consumed entirely by thick green vines, such that ½ of the frame is red, and ½ is green. A plant identifier on the Internet tells me that this is hops, which I am suspicious of, but would be cool if true. I wonder if any of the local breweries used this site for forage. This lot, which has sat empty for decades and decades, is now being filled with expensive condos, to be completed next year. And the red house, sadly, has been drafted into the Conspiracy to Remove Color. The vinyl siding has been removed, and the home is now painted beige, and partially covered in grey formstone.

Red Hook, 2020 #BelieveInFilm #UltraMax400

The rusted metal façade of an industrial building in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Some bits of metallic grey show through, but most of it is covered in thick, deep red rust, and layers of painted graffiti. On the left is a concrete ledge, and sitting on the ledge is a pink empty bottle of sparkling sangria. This photo was taken on a Sunday, so some people must have had a fun time partying on the streets the previous evening.
