The US doesn't have a science problem. It has a priorities problem. We treat science like trivia, test it late, cut it first, then act stunned when adults can't tell evidence from a headline. Kids are born curious. We school it out of them. Not an accident.

Yesterday, Texas parents, students, & advocates shared the estimated public school price tag of private school vouchers - a staggering $294m statewide.

Every dollar lost to vouchers that serve the few reduces choices for the many.

Texas doesn't test science until 5th grade. So for six years it gets treated like recess. Then the state tests my 5th graders on it and acts surprised at the scores. You don't get to ignore a subject for six years and then grade us on it.

Private schools are not required to follow an IEP. That is the part that gets left out of the sales pitch, and families find out after they have already switched. Private schools can accept who they want and send away who they don't.

Today, we're recognizing Texas teachers who give their best every day—patience on the hard days, encouragement on the good ones, and belief in every student in the room.

What's one thing a teacher did for you that you still remember?

Give a 5th grader a battery, a wire, and a bulb and they'll troubleshoot for 30 minutes straight. Give them a worksheet about circuits and they're bored in 2. Kids don't have an attention problem. They have a worksheet problem. Real problems hold attention.

It always comes down to priorities. We find the money for the things we value. Public schools serve everybody, so they should be at the top of the list, not an afterthought. Funding is a choice. So is shortchanging the schools that take every kid.

They're the first ones in and often the last ones out, keeping Texas schools clean, safe, and running. This National School Custodian Appreciation Day, we say thank you.

Nobody falls in love with evaporation from a glossary. We hand 5th graders the vocabulary before they ever see the thing, then wonder why they don't care. Let them watch the puddle shrink first. Wonder before words. #ScienceEd #HandsOnScience #txed

My 5th graders walk in asking 'why' about everything. By spring, we're proud they can stop asking and start bubbling. Somewhere along the way, school trains the curiosity out of the scientist. The 'why' is the science, the rest is just paperwork.

The legislature doesn't write my lesson plans, but it sure loves telling me which science I'm allowed to teach. Funny how the people furthest from my classroom have the strongest opinions about it. The kids are doing science. The adults are doing politics.

If every lab group gets identical results, nobody did science. Real science is messy data and kids arguing about why. The 'wrong' answer with good reasoning beats the copied right one. Hands-on or it didn't happen. #TeachersOfBluesky #ScienceEd #txed

@joshieg.bsky.socialSep 26, 2026, 2:43 AM

We test reading and math for four years, then act shocked when 5th graders can't think like scientists. You don't build science brains with worksheets in the grades that don't count. #TeachersOfBluesky #ScienceEducation #txed
