The Strategy of a Cornered Politician Smith's behavior indicates she realizes she has no easy way out. Her current strategy is a desperate attempt to walk a tightrope: beg the general public to vote "Remain" to preserve her standing with mainstream Albertans, while continuing to appear at events like today's with Tamara Lich to prevent her party's right wing from decapitating her leadership before the November convention. Ultimately, trying to be everything to everyone has left her exposed. If she leans too far toward Canadian unity, her party will replace her; if she leans too far toward the separatists, the Alberta public will replace her with the NDP in the next election.
