When restoring the Chapel Car, Museum staff found a piece of a Santa-themed calendar stuck into the boards of the ceiling. The worn bits of paper were positioned in a way that made sense to staff at the time, then scanned for archival purposes.

Torn pieces of a "Santa Claus Calendar" pulled from the ceiling of Chapel Car 5 Messenger of Peace during its rehabilitation work. It is heavily yellowed/brown with age. The pieces are positioned so that it appears Santa is waving. Under the Northwest Railway Museum watermark, the year 1907 can just barely be made out.

Belated #WildlifeWednesdays:
The Museum recently started to put up new window decals to help further reduce bird-strikes. We've focused on observed problem areas and used pleasant plant-motif decals.
Can you identify some of the native plant species depicted in the decals?
#NRM #TrainMuseum #PNW

A dusty window with a clear imprint from a bird strike. In this case, the bird had thankfully been able to fly away. The Train Shed Exhibit Hall roll-up door windows with the Story Walk on the lower row and the leaf decals on the next two rows up. One of the new, blue picnic tables sits between the doors. The now-decorated rows are the windows that reflect the most forest, thus the ones the birds would fly into most frequently.

Halloween train starts next weekend! Do you have your tickets and costumes ready?
Even our coaches are already getting dressed up for the occasion!

Spokane, Portland, & Seattle Coach 272 next to the boarding platform at the Railway History Campus. Half of a picture perfect spiderweb is strung between it and the platform. Another full spiderweb secured on coach 272 further along the car.

Unless you know in advance, you may not realize the gravity of the structure you're stepping into when you visit the half mile long concrete snow shed in Wellington.

That's how wide the avalanche was.

That IS the avalanche site.

#NRM #TrainMuseum #Wellington #StevensPass #localhistory #avalanches

The start of the snowshed is a gentle downward slope with railings. It curves off to the left in the distance, outlined by concrete arches. The far end of the snowshed arcs slightly to the right where it is starting to collapse. The foreground of the photo is a straight shot with the archways outlining the pathway. One of the interpretive signs along the trail through the snow shed that touches on the disaster and lists the names of those who died in the avalanche.

Back at it again, little guy doing its part to manage the weeds for this week's #WildlifeWednesdays

The same rabbit from the first post, now in a different spot near the parking lot. It is actively munching away at grass and weeds in the small plot, nestled between a giant railway wheelset.

Did you know the scenic Old Pipeline Bed Trailhead near Leavenworth is the site of a historic Great Northern-built power station?
Water from the nearby Tumwater Dam ran generators to power electric locomotives through tunnels and snow sheds in Stevens Pass, including at Wellington!
#NRM #TrainMuseum

A picturesque view of a blue river with large boulders on either side. The foreground is framed in leaves outlined in gold and orange with green still in the middle. In the background, a red bridge still stands. The bridge held a wooden penstock which carried water from the Historic Tumwater Dam over to the power station.

Look who's getting all dressed up for Halloween Train, only a couple weekends away!

Our local garter snakes come in a surprising variety of stripe colors: green, yellow, orange, and sometimes even blue!
#WildlifeWednesdays #NRM #TrainMuseum #snake #snakes #PNW #snoqualmie #halloween

Two garter snakes, either northwestern or common, coiled up together near the Conservation and Restoration Workshop. The larger of the two is the focus, black with orange stripes. The smaller one has the typical pale green stripes.

A cute little guy with no survival instinct to speak of. This young bunny is a resident on campus that has helped with managing weeds this summer!
#WildlifeWednesdays #NRM #TrainMuseum #bunny #rabbit #PNW #Snoqualmie

Small wild bunny with a tiny white spot on its forehead. It sits in front of a red concrete curb and continues to eat grass, aware but unbothered by the photographer standing about 5 feet away.

Fall keeps trying to greet us, even if summer doesn't seem to want to let go just yet. It's getting darker earlier and bringing some welcome rain! The perfect time of year for a cozy train ride.

The Northwest Railway Museum's four Spokane, Portland & Seattle coaches lined up along the boardwalk at the Railway History Campus. The sun is setting so the ambient light is dim. A warm yellow glow shines through the windows of the train cars.

#WildlifeWednesdays? More like WOOLY BEAR WEDNESDAYS! We've spotted the first of the season around here!

These are fuzzy and thankfully harmless to handle. They have no spines or irritating hairs - unlike other fuzzy caterpillar species in the country.
#NRM #TrainMuseum #bugs #moths #caterpillars

A black and orange fuzzy caterpillar crawls up a concrete surface.

Second verse, just like the first. It's Labor Day Weekend again which means the trains are running today AND tomorrow (Monday!) Coach 218 received new seats since the previous photo was taken!

The interior of Spokane, Portland & Seattle Coach 218 from a similar angle as the quoted photo. The formerly red, worn out seats are now a lovely shade of green.
