plaques marking the original location near University of Toronto's Convocation Hall of the Magnetic Observatory

see ALT text for plaque texts

#TOhistory

two plaques mounted vertically on a large stone pillarThis stone marks the site upon which stood one of the three Magnetic Observatories erected by the Imperial Government in 1840: the others being at St. Helena and the Cape of Good Hope.
Meteorological observations were here recorded continuously for sixty-eight years.
The building erected on this site in 1840 was made of logs and was replaced in 1856-7 by the stone building which was taken down in 1908 and re-erected elsewhere in these grounds for astronomical and geodetic use.
This stone also marks the site of a pillar erected in 1881 inside of the Magnetic Observatory tower as a support for a telescope for observing the transit of Venus.
In the southern wall of the building on this site was a stone on which was a bench mark 104.5 feet above the level of Lake Ontario from a survey in 1854, at which time the transit telescope could be sighted on the Lighthouse at the Island.
The stone carrying this bench-mark has been built into the building erected in 1908 by the Dominion Government to replace that removed from this site.
This plate was affixed by order of the Board Of Governors. 1910.
John Hoskin. ChairmanThe magnetic observatory was established on the recommendation of the Royal Society of London in response to the proposal of Baron Alexander von Humboldt that systematic observations of the earth's magnetic field be taken to assist in the theoretical studies of geomagnetism of Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). The observatory on this site used instruments designed by Gauss, and the observations contributed significantly to our knowledge of geomagnetism.
Erected 1977 on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Carl Friedrich Gauss.

Tales of Toronto begins October by republishing my first installment of Torontoist's "Historicist" column, which did a quick skim of the history of the Telegram.

Had I written this a few years later, it would have been a 2-3 parter... #TOHistory

Great read below with early Shuffle Demons history from Jaymz Bee, co-creator of the Kensington Market Jazz Festival

They set a Guinness World Record for the largest saxophone ensemble ever assembled, playing the Hockey Night in Canada theme in glorious, slightly out of tune unison.

the shuffle demons play while a crowd watches, including Jamyz Bee on the right. Jamyz and I went to the same highschool, Inglenook community high school, but a decade+ apart.
