Because nothing shouts "Civilized Democracy!" like a dictator executing citizens in public (regardless of the citizen, it is definitely a scare tactic).

I thought the USA had grown out of such displays at the end of the 19th century.

Putin and Trump Target the Press by Pat Bagley
The image is a political cartoon depicting a scene of violence against the press. In the foreground, a figure representing a journalist lies on the ground, appearing to be shot or attacked. They are wearing a tan jacket and brown pants, with their eyes closed and face turned downwards. Beside them is an open notebook with yellow pages, and a pen. A grey hat is on the ground near the journalist, with a white label that has the Russian word "ПРЕССА" (Pressa, meaning Press) written on it in black Cyrillic letters.

Behind the fallen journalist, two prominent figures are depicted. On the left stands a caricature of Vladimir Putin, dressed in a black suit and red tie. He is holding a smoking pistol in his right hand, aimed downwards, suggesting he is responsible for the journalist's condition. Smoke curls upwards from the barrel of the gun.

To the right of Putin stands a caricature of Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit and a red tie. This red element could symbolize blood or a connection to the violence.

The background is sparsely rendered with a wash of grey, suggesting a somber and possibly dangerous atmosphere. The overall composition places the victim in the foreground and the two powerful figures behind, highlighting their perceived roles in the incident. The cartoon uses exaggerated features for the caricatures to convey their identities and intentions. The color palette is muted, with the exception of the bright red tie and ribbon, which draws significant attention and emphasizes the theme of violence. The artist's signature "BAGLEY" and we…
