There's still a few hours (twenty minutes) left in #TimeSkipJV, and I didn't have time for anything new, so I figured I'd post my favourite snippet from my longfic, an au where Viktor adopts a baby and basically co-parents him with Jayce.

Viktor hated that he kept looking at Jayce’s lips. After everything Jayce had done for him, he did not have the right to be thinking of his partner in that way. He dipped his spoon into his cup of ice cream, stirring it around, and stretched his leg out with a soft sigh, rubbing his hip to relieve the stiff pain that was creeping in. The minimal brace he had been wearing for years wasn’t helping as much anymore. His leg was getting worse, there was nothing he could do about it. Arthur glanced over at him, and he smiled reassuringly. “You good, Vik?” Jayce asked. “Yes, I am, Jayce,” he replied, smiling at Jayce. He was fine. He glanced down at Arthur, who, despite his best efforts, was a bit of a mess, his ice cream and cone gone. He grabbed his handkerchief and wiped Arthur’s cheeks. “ Viktor ,” Arthur complained. “I’m not a baby. I’m nine now, I can clean my own face.” Viktor tutted. “You’re also still hurt and my baby , so I will baby you for as long as I please and there’s nothing you can do about it.” Arthur pouted, his bottom lip sticking out. Jayce chuckled and Arthur glared up at him. Jayce held up his hands defensively. “Don’t involve me,” he said. “I am a bystander.” “You laughed, you involved yourself,” Arthur insisted. Jayce laughed again, breathlessly. Viktor hated how much he loved that sound. “Got me there.” He reached out and booped Arthur’s nose with a finger. Arthur hissed playfully back. “So did the dumpster science not work out and you’re a babysitter now?” a voice drawled. Jayce’s whole body tensed and Viktor watched as he swallowed. “Hi Dmitri,” he managed through a grimaced smile, turning a bit to face the man. “My partner and I are just taking a break from our research because it’s a beautiful day.” He gestured at Viktor and Arthur with his ice cream cone. Viktor glanced past him at Dmitri, recalling him vaguely from the Academy. He had promise, but was also painfully boring. For an inventor, he lacked imagination. He could see Arthur’s shoulders tensing up out of the corner of his eye. “We’ll be heading back to our lab in a bit to work on Hextech.” “Sure, sure. Everyone’s talked about this Hextech ,” Dmitri said. Jayce’s shoulders dropped, and Viktor clenched his fist. “You don’t actually think playing with magic rocks will actually help progress–” “You wouldn’t know progress if it hit you in the face!” Arthur insisted, cutting Dmitri off as he scrambled up. Viktor’s eyes widened. “Excuse me?” Dmitri said. “Care to repeat that, kid?” “I said— You wouldn’t know progress if it hit you in the face so leave Jayce alone! He’s brilliant!” Arthur retorted. “Arthur—” Jayce started. Arthur stamped his foot. “No! You and Viktor are going to change the world! He doesn’t get to just be mean to you because he’s too much of a troglodyte to see it!” Arthur snapped. Viktor looked at Jayce, who looked actually gobsmacked, his mouth open and eyes wide. Arthur’s shoulders were stiff and his free hand was clenched. “Go. Away,” he insisted to Dmitri, who seemed even more shocked than Jayce, but he held up his hands. “Now!” “Okay, okay, don’t bite my head off, kid,” he muttered as he backed off. “Fucking weirdo.” “Hey! Leave him alone, he’s nine!” Jayce snapped, getting up and wrapping an arm around Arthur. Arthur started, staring up at Jayce. “And he’s right!” Dmitri shook his head, rolling his eyes before leaving. Viktor could see Jayce subtly flip the man off as he walked away.

Summary: His partner was a peculiar person, Viktor had noticed; as only geniuses could be. During his years at the Academy, Viktor had encountered arrogant and unpleasant and not-so-intelligent-as-they-believed-themselves-to-be academics, but it was all too easy to simply orbit Jayce Talis's reality and to observe him, learn about him. Or Viktor can't help but notice even the smallest things that make Jayce Talis who he is, and that makes him feel guilty; but perhaps that's just their thing.
