If people had the time and space to integrate what they already kind of know and understand, we would become much more intelligent collectively, very, very quickly.

#SystemsThinking #Education đŸ§”

Over the last ten years, I’ve been genuinely stunned to understand how common it is for people to learn about history, science, art, and literature without fully integrating that knowledge into the way they perceive the world.

A lot of people sincerely love these subjects and intellectually understand what they’ve learned. But information can remain inside the context where it was encountered. History stays history. Science stays science. Art is something to appreciate, and literary analysis is something used to explain a text.

Integration begins when knowledge starts traveling. A historical pattern changes the way you read a novel; the novel gives you language for human behavior you later recognize in politics, relationships, or yourself; a scientific principle changes how you understand art, nature, or consciousness. Each connection alters the meaning of the others until the relationships between them begin coming alive.

That knowledge becomes part of how you see.

I think this is so common because comprehension can feel like integration. Someone can speak intelligently about a subject without realizing that the information hasn’t become active anywhere else inside them.

For years, I listened to people discuss these things and assumed that entire relational network was operating underneath what they were saying. When I couldn’t find it, I assumed I didn’t understand them. It seemed much more reasonable than assuming they were only saying what they meant at the level they were saying it.

Integration happens in degrees, and every person has information they’ve understood without allowing it to travel very far. Learning to recognize the difference gives us the opportunity to engage with knowledge more deeply—to let what we learn enter into relationship with everything else we know and change the instrument doing the learning.

I’m just a crazy man on a milk crate, yelling at people who don’t care, but

ALT TEXT FOR THREAD:

There is not a single person who is organized around politics who is psychologically well right now.

Whether this was consciously designed or simply emerged from the incentives involved, the result is the same: two major political parties and their surrounding media ecosystems keep the general population too frightened and psychologically destabilized to mount an effective response to anything.

It functions as brilliant psychological warfare.

Everyone who thinks they are doing the absolute most to make people aware of the atrocities, from either side, is essentially cognitively curb-stomping the people around them.

They believe they are mobilizing people by keeping the atrocities visible. Meanwhile, they are helping maintain a population too frightened and cognitively overloaded to develop the stability, personal agency, and sustained attention required to build power and do something about it.

ALT TEXT FOR FULL POST:

By the way, this isn’t something that you, me, or anyone can just overcome with more discipline or intellect, except by learning to stay calm enough to widen our field of perception again.

Fear, as a function, alerts us to danger and narrows our attention to the things that seem relevant to solving the problem directly in front of us.

That doesn’t mean the information we perceive through fear is false. It means fear gives us a tightly cropped image of reality, emphasizing whatever might help us survive the immediate threat while screening out information that does not seem relevant.

That cropped image may be exactly what saves us in an emergency.

But complex problem-solving requires us to step back far enough to recover the information that fell outside the frame.

If you want to be the kind of person who solves complex social problems, you have to learn to be in a measured relationship with your fears.

So many of the world’s complex problems persist precisely because we try to solve them superficially, using “common knowledge,” without examining the underlying mechanisms that continue producing the same results across different social groups.

If you came up with a solution to a complex problem primarily because you were afraid of something, it’s probably not a very good solution in the grand scheme of things.

It will sound good and obvious to other people who are scared of the same things you’re scared of. But to people who do not share that fear, it will likely seem extreme in some ways and reductive in others.

Fear can alert us to danger, but it cannot be permitted to govern complex problem-solving.

Something I had to learn over and over before it finally stuck:

If you don't take responsibility for the ways you participate in your own psychological torture, you genuinely cannot expect to get better.

That doesn't mean you caused whatever first hurt you. It means no pill and no single person outside of you can enter your mind, trace every root, and make it all better for you.

They can help. They cannot do your part.

Eventually, you have to get in there with the roots of your beliefs and sort out what is true, what was put there by someone else, what once protected you, and what is now perpetuating your pain.

It's painful, absolutely. But it's effective.

You have to learn to be really real with yourself—without turning honesty into another weapon—so you can stop cooperating with what hurts you.

And so you can learn to be really real with everyone else, too.

My brain is currently oversaturated from editing my book, but the unsolicited essay factory is flourishing! 😂

I still have no idea how I’m going to organize and share all this new long-form writing, but here’s a snippet.

#ThoughtJournal #CulturalCritique

Once dehumanization becomes an acceptable tool, every group eventually discovers a reason to use it. A world organized around the search for scapegoats cannot become safe through the selection of a more deserving scapegoat. It only preserves the machinery and changes who is placed inside it.

This is so important when you’re co-creating with spirit.

It’s easy to become addicted to the method of revelation without ever integrating what you’ve been shown.

Once the instrument has shown you something, set it down.

Then work with what you’ve seen.

I tried to write a caption for the dream post, but it turned into an early-morning rant about how the realities we rehearse internally shape the lives we become capable of building.

This is why I’ve always resonated with crazy men who yell at crowds from atop a milk crate. 😂

Frothing. 😂

#ThoughtJournal #Relationships

FROTHING at the mouth over the owner/architect of a home in West Sussex as he explains his values, his design process, and how he used his psychology training to shape the way people move, feel, slow down, and live within the space.

The attention to detail is extraordinary.

His wife gushes over choices she initially questioned or resisted, explaining how they created parts of her daily life she never knew she needed and now couldn’t imagine living without.

We talk about women wanting men to “help” at home. We talk less about wanting men to become thoughtful co-creators of the environments and experiences their families live inside.

I think many women want exactly this: not just help, but shared authorship.
