Ataru's Mom may not get as much screen time as she did in the Oshii era but I love how she takes whatever she is given and RUNS with it!

So yeah...BOTH chapters that were the basis for this episode were so early in the manga's run that Viz published them before the manga went on that looooooooooong hiatus before our modern release.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode187 #AnimeRetroRewatch

Sometimes it's VERY clear this is proto-Ranma and proto-Akane right down to sharing the same braincell and if folks didn't ship Ryuu with Benten then Shinobu was the "other" option!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode187 #AnimeRetroRewatch

What's even funnier is the 2008 30th Anniversary OVA adapted parts of this volume too, so they were STILL making new animation from this volume!
(I know I haven't talked about tonight's episode but it's Ten so I DO NOT CARE!)
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode186 #AnimeRetroRewatch

BTW, @digiranma.bsky.social if you happen upon any bookstore that happens to carry Urusei Yatsura Vol. 14 when you flip through it you'll probably go "Wow, they pretty much adapted the ENTIRE season from this volume!"
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode186 #AnimeRetroRewatch

It is funny how both the UY and Ranma reboots gave Ten and Happosai MUCH less screentime which is very telling on both the OG animes.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode185 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

So while this is manga based we've reached the part of the series where they're adapting the "current" chapters more conservatively and either doing filler or adapting stuff from WAY earlier in the run!

"It tastes strange."
"Aren't you becoming numb?"
Okay...the Medou family is becoming MORE like the Kunos.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode185 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

I'm having flashbacks to the "Spring of Drowned Man" arc and the Ranma cast getting stuck in various traps in the Kuno Estate!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode185 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

You can TELL this was SUPPOSED to be after Ran was shortly introduced but the anime was running on fumes at this point and adapted it here!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode184 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Yeah...Ataru deserved ALL of that! Also I wanna point out this is adopting the earlier manga chapters and contrasts with a leter episode is his whole "pickup" routine!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode184 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Also wanna point out this is the last episode to air in 1985. As this aired on Christmas day of that year!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode184 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

To point out to @furinkan.com that lists this as an anime original episode the basis seems to be from Volume 7, Chapter 62 "Fortune Fear"!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode184 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Ohhhhhhh NOTHING good can come from this...at all.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode183 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Yeaaaaah...
I think I'm gonna check out a bit with this episode.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode183 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

I wonder about the viewership ratings for this episode for...reasons.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode182 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Y'know despite the animation being a bit cheaper this season the team is still flexing like in this whole hallway sequence.
(Also pretty sure Digi is feeling this episode has an Oshii-esque vibe so far)
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode182 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

When I say that Sakura and Tsubame are Kyoko and Godai coded...that is NOT allegory it's straight up the same characters utilized in a different story.
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode182 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

I feel like the pitfall joke WAS in the manga but I can't remember where!
#UruseiYatsura #LUM #ThoseObnoxiousAliens #Episode181 #AnimeRetroRewatch @digiranma.bsky.social

Okay SOMEONE on the animation or writing staff wanted to BREED this man badly!
