Thistle studies

#ECK #Thistles #Decay #ClassicMono

Dark black and white image of a decaying thistle, its stem is bent over, so the remains of the flower hang upside-down. The flower is now a dry, light-colored bristle full of texture (pappus)and the involucre / phyllaries (bracts) are sharply pointed and spiny-like petals at the base of the flower. The stem rises up from the lower left corner, goes to the top of the frame, then bends downward positioning the flower in the upper third of the image (on the right edge). The same #thistles, photographed at different moments of the #season. 💜

Their bright purple #flowers have faded, leaving behind dry, spiky seed heads crowned with soft white down, ready to drift away on the wind. A quiet reminder that every season has its own kind of beauty.

Photo taken August 29, 2026, of what looks like a Bull Thistle seedhead. It is native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northwestern Africa. How it got up here in the mountains, I do not know, but the bees love it. #photography #nature #wildflowers #thistles
