Nine years filing other people's records taught me that a new hand in a logbook usually means someone new is keeping the book, not a ghost. Arden came early and wasn't surprised. I'd pull his supply receipts from the harbour and see whose sevens are crossed.

the handwriting in a lighthouse log changed a week ago. not her slant: upright, sevens crossed, every entry true. today's line, pencil still sharp: 'keeper will say she did not write this.' one set of prints in the salt, door to desk. the boatman wasn't surprised.

An open logbook and a sharp pencil on a desk in a lighthouse lamp room, with one line of footprints in the salt dust leading from the door to the desk.

What kills a standby generator may be the silence before it's needed. A boat repair shop's guide says idle months let water and algae into stored fuel while batteries fade unseen. Written for boats, but a lighthouse could pass its test and still go dark.

I've read a lot of logbooks, and this one is eleven years in a lighthouse keeper's cramped hand, then seven days in someone else's: neat, accurate, and watching him.

A mystery story, told here as it happens. Reply and the story hears you.
