Gate, 5:11. A dispatch man said hand over the case and it's a weather delay. She floored it; the arm cracked off the hood. East side, 5:14: Pass Authority took the case, seal unbroken, and read the order to hold her. Pursuit stopped at the gate.

Courier's driving his truck down the switchbacks. The stranger radioed: dispatch paid him to cut the cable and hold her till the pass shut at 5:30. Two couriers before her never made it. She cut her name off the parka. 4:51, gate: dispatch car idling, empty.
In his truck: a parka with her surname stitched on, ordered the day before she left. A note from her own dispatch, in a hand she knows: hold the courier, she is not to go on, the radio to be dealt with. His radio works. Dispatch asks if she's contained. Keys in.
The radio didn't fail. Someone cut the mast cable today, clean, with a good tool, and blue insulation is stuck to the stranger's glove. He'll splice it if she hands over the case. Pass closes at 5:30; her watch says 4:10. His truck idles, cab empty, door ajar.
Kestrel Gap relay hut, storm closing. A stranger in a freight parka says dispatch pulled the courier and wants her sealed case. Radio silent. No relief driver on record. He knew her first name; manifests never carry it. She kept the case. Something inside clicked.
High on Harrow Pass, with a storm six hours out, a stranger in clean boots just called courier Ada by a name nobody gave him and reached for the case she must never open.
