Za pravdu — “For the truth”.

Letters revealed by sunlight and shadow on a wall in Prague. An iPhone photograph from August 2025, rediscovered today, and now a small print for my journal.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography #Prague

Sunlight passing through letters cut into projecting metal plates spells “Za pravdu”—“For the truth”—within staggered shadows on a warm, pale wall in Prague. Part of a stone arch enters the lower left corner.

A Sail at Evening

A tiny white sail catches the evening light off Brighton and Hove, beneath distant wind turbines. Autumn trees frame the sea from Three Cornered Copse—an unexpected photograph from this evening’s dog walk.

Obelisk.

A lunchtime wander through Steyning churchyard. Sunlight on stone, a dark yew behind, and a photograph that found its shape in black and white.

Autumn Reedmace

The seed head is beginning to break apart, catching the morning light against the soft shapes of the reeds behind it. Green Ridge, Brighton.

Hiding in the Clutter

Sometimes there simply isn’t a clean background. A magpie tucked into the lattice of branches at Three Cornered Copse this morning.

Autumn Landing

A hoverfly taking a brief pause among the changing leaves at Three Cornered Copse. The mix of green, yellow and blue caught my eye as much as the insect itself.

Towards the Windmill

I’ve been trying to make this photograph for years. This morning the long lens was finally on the camera, the light was good and the dog walkers were in exactly the right place.

Green Ridge, Brighton.

A morning beside the River Adur: a grey heron watching the shallows, a black-headed gull crossing the mud, and two views of a little egret on the exposed banks.

Overcast light, low tide, and plenty to watch.

Under the Railway.

Repeating beams and rusted cross-braces beneath the railway bridge over the River Adur. Two treatments of the same view: I slightly prefer the muted colours, but the monochrome brings out the geometry.

Face-to-face

Ten minutes at lunchtime and a grasshopper that tolerated me leaning awkwardly over a grave just long enough to get the photograph I wanted. A substantial crop, but the light, low viewpoint and expression made it worth it.

#photooftheday #year3 #thebrownstuff #photography #grasshopper

A grasshopper faces the camera at ground level on a sunlit stone surface in Steyning, West Sussex. Warm autumn sunlight catches its antennae and body while strong shadows and the rough texture of the stone create a dark, dramatic setting.

A lacewing in the hallway.

Both images are handheld focus stacks with the OM-1 II and 90mm Macro. The closer view was shot with flash, revealing remarkable detail in the compound eye.

Along the Adur

Three photographs from a lunchtime wander beside the River Adur today. High tide, September sky and rather more water than I’d have liked .

Sometimes a walk produces one photograph; sometimes the pictures work better together.
