How much you can expect to make from a successful play in Boston in 1797: $2k

Bunker-Hill; Or The Death Of General Warren

source: Joseph I. Shulim, “John Daly Burk: Irish Revolutionist and American Patriot,”
Transactions of the American Philosophical Society 54, no. 6: 1964, 19 #theatrehistory 🗃️

clipping: "The play was performed nine times from February 20 to May 10, 1797 in the Haymarket. In addition to the original payment for the play, three performances were billed as "Author's night," which meant that John [Daly Burk] received part of the proceeds. All told, Burk made $2,000 by the Boston production of his play. The author declared that between 2,500 and 3,000 erson attended at all time and that the applause was enthusiastic. There is no doubt that Bunker-Hill was a success

🎭 135 years of the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham!

Opened on 1 October 1891, Frank Matcham’s theatre contains the oldest surviving working Matcham auditorium — still welcoming audiences 135 years later.

A remarkable survivor and a very happy birthday!

An unexpected place to find the best work on performance theory and analysis I’ve read in years, but The Oxford Handbook of the Georgian Theatre (ed. Swindells & @davidftaylor.bsky.social) is exactly that. An absolutely brilliant volume. 📚🎭

As plague closed the theatres in 1610 Ben Jonson was brave enough to write a comedy about what those who were left in the city did while their masters fled & produced perhaps his best comedy. #theatre #theatrehistory #thealcehemist #benjonson podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...
