In the moment Sam let go a sigh of relief, another buzzard swooped in, and with a fuzzy digitised squark, knocked the knight into the lava.

Today on #WIPSnips, the opening paragraph from Bit#6: The Master System (unedited!).

#WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

A First Degree Chuntey Breach at Bootlesquith Manor sounded like a TED Talk on the history of alarms rattled out in a single lesson at Surbiton High, squeezed in between Philosophy and double French to the utter bamboozlement of both Year 9 and the entire faculty. Loud electronic wails and rotating beacons competed with awooga horns, an World War 2 air raid siren, and eventually the tinkling of bells desperately hoping to summon assistance from an Edwardian butler lost deep inside the mansion. Somewhere a bonobo was probably banging rocks together frantically.

Despite The Ambivalence Chronicles heavily featuring a vehicle named in honour of the King of the tyrant lizards, the word lizard only appears in Bit#4: The Dragon Download, in reference to a dragon. So here it is.

#WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

Huddled in the crumbling fire exit of a ransacked Woolworths, McCaffrey, Pearl and Fella held their breath and watched the ominous shadow of the dragon which circled overhead. With every pass, scorched embers and bits of architecture rained down around them, a cursed pick n mix spilt by hell's clumsiest toddler.

Pearl glared at McCaffrey. 'Say you're dragon hunters, they said. It'll be fun, they said.'

'Nobody expected dragons to be real!' McCaffrey hissed back at her.

'That's because they're not!'

As if to prove the point, a large lizard-like creature of the genus draco volans viridius spat a huge plume of fire into the middle of the square. The town crest of Romford, once artfully picked out in decorative block paving, turned briefly into a puddle of lava, then solidified into a blobby charcoal space invader. Beyond it, a few stragglers from the failed Assembly ambush broke from the limited shelter offered by the Tourist Information office a faux-Japanese pagoda in the middle of the square -and ran for cover in a nearby supermarket.

#LitHodgePodge | Day 7

I don't always use the slightly sarcastic, occasionally silly, dry British humour voice, but when I do, it looks a bit like this.

It was the work of a nanosecond for Pearl to realise that leaving the Save Point was not the brightest idea her so-called mentor McCaffrey had thrust upon her. It was right up there with 'pretending to be dragon hunters' and 'not going back to the Save Point when it started to rain'.
Instead, they had ended up at an eerily empty market square, overlooked by an epic statuary of five figures, which a sun-bleached information board nearby introduced as the De Romford family, the five 'founding fathers' of the town.

'Bit sexist,' Pearl commented, 'at least three of them are women.'

McCaffrey ignored her, instead cocking his head to try and decipher the stylised word mark one of them wore. 'Fascinating detail on the outfits,' he said. 'So colourful. In both palette and language,' he added when he realised what that word was.

'I don't think that's part of the original statue,' Pearl said.

McCaffrey had started off on a rambling monologue about the constantly changing state of art, when the rain suddenly escalated into a spectacularly violent thunderstorm. Apathetic about sculpture, and firmly opposed to getting much wetter than she already was, Pearl looked around for whatever shelter was to be found around the market place. A low budget portico entrance labelled 'Romford Indoor Market' and 'Closed until further notice' and 'we agopolise for the inconvience' beckoned. Through a gap in the closed roller shutters, a closing down sale notice tormented them with offers of 70% off all umbrellas as they huddled between leaks in the canopy, looking increasingly like piles of damp rags left out awaiting a bin lorry that would never come.

Today in #WIPSnips: Schneider drops an atlas; the Glass becomes a maze; and Phil makes a comparison.

From Bit#6: The Master System

#WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

But even as Schneider reached out for it, the dog-eared paperback began to glow with the same back-lit cyan as the rest of the world, then dissolved into pixels and was absorbed into the Glass.
‘No!’ Phil shouted, throwing his gauntletted hands up in despair and turning away from the rapidly melting atlas.
‘Destination?’
‘What?’ Phil turned back and saw Poke winking at him.
‘Destination?’ Poke repeated.
‘Er… the Gyron,’ Phil looked to his digital companions for support, but they just shrugged robotically.
The weirdly digitised Atlas lifted momentarily out of the pixel soup, flicked through a few pages, then melted back into the Glass, but where the more or less physical book had disappeared, a map still glowed on the floor, and a lone pixel glowed, tracing a route through a maze of right angles that gave Phil a momentary flashback to the events at Paleozoic Park - which, in comparison, seemed relatively normal now.

The whole Ambivalence team are somewhat reluctantly playing their parts - just look at the hi-viz ninja - with the possible exception of Bryonetta Bootlesquith, the initially manipulative mentor.

I looked at today's #WIPSnips and thought why the hex would I have rice in The Ambivalence Chronicles? Obviously I completely forgot the whole pudding flood scene...

#WriteSky #WritingPrompts #WritingCommunity #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

The Ambivalence Chronicles

‘Err…’ Phil watched the rice pudding build into a squidgy mound until it imploded under its own weight and surged across the field in a wave of creamy yumminess. ‘How do I turn it off?’
‘What?’ Sam’s voice crackled.
IT APPEARS THE ENTELECHUS IS RESONATING WITH THE GOBLETS MAGIC, Dexy chipped in.
‘You used a magic goblet?’ Charlotte exclaimed.
‘I did try to say!’
THE TWO MAGICS HAVE CREATED A FEEDBACK LOOP.
‘A what?’ Sam asked.
‘A pudding flood!’ Phil shouted, as the tiny goblet vomited a huge geyser of rice pudding into the air, to a mix of alarm and excitement from the watching crowds.

Today on #WIPSnips, a fun little snip from The Master System, but the fourth wall reference doesn't happen anywhere else in the series so it may not make the final edit. But it might, because it's all a bit silly anyway...

'Viktor Wendig is here,' he said.

An uncomfortable silence entered the room.

Charlotte tried to ignore it by examining the code rain and vector graphics on some of the screens nearby.

'He's reached the Master System?' Bryonetta asked.

'No,' Benny said. 'I mean, yes, but that's not all. He's here. He's in Surbiton.'

'We're in Surbiton!?' Charlotte said.

'What happened to Kempston?' Nectarine asked.

'That,' Bryonetta glanced at the fourth wall, 'is another story.'

The only petals in The Ambivalence Chronicles so far are in the 'romantic sub plot' of Bit#4: The Dragon Download.

#WIPSnips #WritingPrompts #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

Grell fumbled with candles far too delicate for his cumbersome fingers, persisting until the candlelight danced, disguising the room's bareness in an attempt to look romantic.

'Rose petals,' he muttered to himself, scattering the wilted rhododendron blossom he had collected to mark the path from the door, to the table, and from there to the sofa, a hopeful indication of the course the evening may take.

In an unlit corner of the room, the old computer sat quietly. Once he turned the monitor off, it would be all but invisible; Grell hoped its effects

the effects of the Entelechus Hex - would not be.

At the knock of the door, he tapped the ENTER key.

Nothing happened.

Grell's heart stopped, and panic gripped him. He was about to push the button again, when a random sequence of characters appeared, and started raining down the screen.

'Oh thank goodness,' he whispered, and turned off the monitor.

Another knock at the door. 'Grell?' Fella tried the handle. 'Are you in there?'

'On my way!' he called back, watching wide-eyed as the digital rain poured out from the monitor and began to cross the floor.

'Come along Grell, what is so important you had to drag me over here anyway?' Fella shouted.

'Oh no no no no,' Grell whispered as the room filled with flickering green and black light.

Dent, as in, the late Dentarthurdent?

Here's a snip from Bit#6: The Master System, in which Sir Philip of Grundy, Magic Knight Who Says 'Arg', arrives in a mysterious place known as The Glass.

#WIPSnips #WritingPrompts #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #TheAmbivalenceChronicles

Phil Grundy did not know where he was.

A few moments ago he was in a dark tower in a spooky forest in the grounds of Romford Castle. He had rescued Charlie, and then... somehow he must have glitched that world out of existence and ended up here, landing awkwardly with an uncomfortable clatter on a floor which was hard and glass-like, denting his armour and bruising his bottom. An angry squall of pixels illuminated the void as they fell around him, drawn into neat lines which then flowed away in neon blue pulses toward the horizon, which was marked with vast towers, pyramids and monoliths of bright green and red, which struck a weird note of familiarity despite the utter weirdness of the entire place. 'Fascinating,' he Spocked, peering into the glassy floor at the gridlines which glowed deep within it, all silver and angular, and giving off the same backlit Tron vibes as the neon pulses and monochrome background illustration. 'What is this place?'

Honestly I don't even know what day jobs (if any) the misfits in #TheAmbivalenceChronicles have.

But based solely on the ubiquity of mazes in early computer games, I'm gonna say there'd be a Minotaur involved somewhere.

We are approaching the time when The Knight Errors is longer a WIP, but until then, hopefully this isn't too spoilery.

Phil lunged, clanking, his no longer dextrous fingers just managing to grip the ZX81 before it took a potentially fatal tumble down a stone spiral staircase. After a quick visual inspection revealed little outward harm, Phil placed the little computer carefully back inside the handbag - which, upon closer examination, he noticed was labelled 'POPPINS', and not Prada after all - gathered up the other various items that had dropped, and hurried back to the familiarity of the Ambivalence, praying that Dexy had not suffered any internal injuries.

In the middle of the room, on a slightly raised platform beneath beneath an expansive dome of computer screens, the familiar silhouette of Benito 'Benny' Stetson, surrounded by keyboards and computers, turned to Bryonetta, then did a double take at the rest of them. Then he did a triple take at Lady Nectarine, who he appeared not to recognise. Bryonetta gave him a look which unambiguously meant 'Well?'

'If we're going to make sure this,' she gestured at the scenes of destruction around them, 'doesn't spread across the multiverse, we need to get to The Master System.'

'To the what now?' Sam said as they joined her in the Ambivalence.

'The Master System. The Prime Universe. Earth Zero, Bryonetta smiled. 'The Original, you might say.'

'You're late.'
Startled, Phil dropped the copy of Romford Now and Then he had only just picked up, managing to catch it between his right knee and the 'local celebrities' shelf. Embarrassed, he straightened pages 34-42, and placed the book back on its shelf before turning to face the oddly metallic and echoey voice which had addressed him.
'Um... Late?' he started. 'Did you text me a reminder, because I'm terrible with appointments...'
