Sunset at the Portara—the great gateway to the Temple of Apollo in Naxos Town (Chora)—offers a magnificent spectacle overlooking the Aegean Sea. Access to the site on the islet of Palatia is free and open at all times. The Portara is a monumental marble gateway belonging to an unfinished temple dating back to the 6th century BCE. The town faces west, creating an ideal alignment for watching the sun disappear over the horizon.
