🥳🥳 I did it! I finally succeeded in doing the folded join, and I’m super happy about it.

I switched to a much thicker thread, i.e. yarn. It’s so much easier to see the stitches (and undo them 🙄).

And yes, I added picots because they make counting the stitches more manageable. 🙈

Three finished tatted pieces on a wooden table, all featuring a rosette motif. The very pale pink one is the piece where I wasn’t sure whether I had done the folded join correctly. The pale green one is the largest, made with Schachenmayr Catania yarn, a skein of which can also be seen partly in the picture. Although the pale green rosette is finished and the folded join was done correctly, one end is still attached to a turquoise tatting shuttle, which is also lying on the table. The smallest motif is the original one where I first stumbled upon the folded join. It is a rosette motif with a tail, tatted in pale lilac thread. It is completely finished; in particular, I managed to join the last ring to the first one using the folded join.

Beginner tatter struggles continue… 🙈

I kind of managed to finish a rosette with a slightly thicker thread. Kind of… because I think that my folded join turned out twisted, and I haven’t managed to close the rosette on the original motif where I first stumbled upon it. 🙄

In the front left is a finished rosette motif in pale rose-coloured thread. The main tatting piece at the centre front is an unfinished rosette pattern with a tail in pale lilac-coloured thread. Both tatting shuttles are still attached. The motif isn’t finished because I haven’t managed to join the last ring to the first one correctly.

My third tatted motif went great until I came to the last join, and I learned why it’s different… After many tries at making the folded join correctly, the thread just said it had had enough. 🙈

It’s so mean because the motif looks so simple, yet beautiful 🤩

The rosette’s fifth and final petal isn’t closed, and one thread is broken due to too much abrasion from repeatedly undoing and redoing the folded join. The shuttle thread broke when I was trying to close the last ring after the folded join.

I had some respect for tatting with two shuttles… But, wow! It’s not difficult, and what I really, really love about it is how the working shuttle tensions its thread 🤩

There are no decorative picots on my second piece. Reasons? I don’t like their look and I don’t like making them 🙈

My second tatted flower-like object, with a pale yellow centre and lilac petals, lying on a wooden desk. My tatting still looks slightly wonky, especially the petals made solely with chain. The last chain looks much better because I learned the trick of pulling on the shuttle thread a little to condense the double stitches and make the chain look neater. The pattern is from the New Tatting Book by Tomoko Morimoto, which can be partially seen in the photo. Part of my first tatted flower can be seen to the left of the second one.
