Maryland Systema does not use belts, uniforms, forms, or tournaments.

Training focuses on breathing, balance, awareness, movement, distance, and adapting when conditions change.

You are not trying to make every situation fit a memorized response.

Most beginners notice the same thing in their first Systema class: pressure changes how they move.

Breathing gets shorter, muscles tighten, balance shifts.

Training starts by noticing those reactions and learning to work through them.

Videos show you someone else's Systema training.

A seminar lets you feel your own balance, tension, movement and reactions when distance and pressure change.

That firsthand experience tells you far more.

Try the training. Ask questions. Decide for yourself.

Curious about Systema? Experience it before deciding what you think.

A seminar lets you explore changing distance, balance, grabs, strikes, restricted movement, and physical pressure firsthand.

Ask questions. Test the ideas. Decide for yourself.

What happens to your breathing when pressure rises?

You may hold it, shorten it, or speed it up before you notice the tension.

Systema training helps you catch that change earlier so you can keep moving, observing, and deciding.

Confined space changes everything. When a wall, car, railing, or doorway limits movement, pushing harder is not always the answer.

We train to find the smallest useful opening: enough room to turn, stay balanced, and move toward safety.

Pressure narrows attention. You watch one threat and stop noticing the exit, the curb behind you, or someone approaching from the side.

In Maryland Systema, we work on keeping the immediate threat in context.

See the threat. Keep seeing the room.

Fatigue changes more than strength. Movement becomes less efficient, attention narrows, and unnecessary tension wastes energy.

The goal is not to ignore fatigue. Learn to recognize what is changing and adjust before those changes start making decisions for you.

One hand may be injured, trapped, or occupied.

You still have movement, balance, positioning, and the rest of your body.

Practical self-defense means learning to keep functioning when one option disappears.

Protecting someone else changes your priorities.

You have to manage the threat, the person you are helping, and the exit at the same time.

A route that works only for you is not enough when someone else depends on your decisions.

Tension often spreads.

A tight grip can stiffen your forearm, shoulder, neck and breathing.

Partner drill: A gives light shoulder pressure. B keeps breathing and takes a small step instead of pushing back.

Notice where tension begins.

Use only the effort you need.
