🌊Did you know a single photosynthetic bacterium powers the ocean's #phosphorus cycle? Waggoner et al. show that #Synechococcus does this in their dataset & article at doi.org/10.25422/azu... & doi.org/10.1093/fems.... Image: Waggoner et al. (2024). CC BY 4.0 #OpenData #OpenScience #MarineLife

Line graphs showing growth curves over 15 days measured by in vivo fluorescence (RFU) for two Synechococcus strains, open-ocean WH8102 (A, C) and coastal WH5701 (B, D), grown under different dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) conditions. Panels A and B display growth on phosphate controls (+Pi, -Pi), phosphoanhydrides (3-PolyP, 45-PolyP, ATP), and phosphoesters (AMP, Glc-6-P), showing strong growth on phosphoanhydrides for both strains. Panels C and D show growth on additional phosphoester and phosphorus–carbon compounds (MPn, EPn, 2-AEPn, 4-NpPn, BisMUF-P) compared to Pi controls, showing little to no growth on these substrates relative to +Pi.
